Re: Calculating retention

JT, For a simple and quick ratio calculation I suppose the following works best for me: Starting Policy Count minus Cancellations/Nonrenewals divided by Starting Policy Count 5000 - 500 / 5000 = 9 or 90% But, then I'm no math whiz. I'm sure there are more sophisticated formulas out there. The ones w...

Re: BA vs BAT policy

I must admit that I am a bit confused by your question. The only BAT form I am familiar with, in connection with trucking accounts, is the DOT Breath Alcohol Testing (BAT) Form. Now, if you are wondering whether a BAP (Business Auto Policy) is the appropriate policy form for truckers, then I would d...

Re: It was the best of times, it was the worst of times

So, what I'd like to know...is my experience becoming more common either in my own state or elsewhere? D, you're not alone. Every agency owner goes through these lulls. In spite of change, some things always remain the same. If you look back to the 70's, 80's, and 90's you witness agency owners try...

Re: Newbie Question about Pay

How much you receive in commission (percentage of the commission paid to the agency) will depend pretty much on how involved you are in the marketing, sale, placement and servicing of the account. If, for example, you are receiving reimbursement for all of your expenses (marketing and sales expenses...

Re: Increase in Cobra Health Insurance Premium???

The only cap is on the amount the prior employer can charge for administration - 2%. The rate increase seems a bit high. I would have the client ask for the prior year and current rate sheets just to verify the increase, and then check with the broker servicing the group to make sure that all of his...

Gaber, don't worry about the time you have to cram or finding additional study materials. The program is designed to take advantage of a pre-exam review and your short term memory to guarantee success. Just be sure to be engaged in the classes (ask and answer questions - put the iPod/computer/newspa...

First, let me just say that I'm not an attorney, never want to be an attorney, and do not want to pretend I'm as informed as an attorney when providing information to clients (though I do want to be able to charge by the minute, have clients pay through the nose for every minor administrative gestur...

Depends on the carrier's premium payment options. Typically, yes, premium can be paid using a semi-annual, quarterly, or monthly payment mode. Some carriers have minimum premium requirements for other than annual payment.

Re: Ready to open my own agency?

First, is there a noncompete in place with the current agency or prior agencies? If yes, then you may have legal challenges. Whatever you do, do not walk away with the agency's client list as a primer for your new agency or any other proprietary information. Starting a "Scratch" agency can...

I suppose I would start with advising my client to get up with an attorney to draft a contract for services to be signed by the parents of the child to be tutored and an agreement to perform to be signed by the child being tutored. Then I would check with a carrier with a solid background insuring e...

Trotter, if this is a WC "Depop" account, and the issue deals with an audit, you will need to advise your client that s/he will not be able to replace coverage until they are in compliance. If this is simply an underwriting request for information about the risk, get the information and re...

Re: Terrorism coverage and small business GL

Insurers and re-insurers view the terrorism loss potential as a very real risk across all the lines currently covered by the Federal safety net provided by TRIA. For example, a terrorist attack on a college or professional sports stadium would not only result in substantial physical damage, but coul...

"D", I too agree with you. If I were in your position, I suppose I would have a 5 year plan to develop my agency into an attractive "buyout" asset to a larger, regional agency. Get on board with a well-known, Top-10 California agency, start marketing your services to the "as...
