Re: looking for some guidance on startup agency

Most here (including me) will recommend that you align with an independent agency versus trying to go on your own. Given the fact you have minimal experience, and what experience you do have is with Farmers, joining a mid-sized regional firm is going to be the best recommendation.

Re: Dealing with a possibly unethical customer

If you have any documentation that this former insured chose not to renew (i.e. a letter from him, copy of a letter you sent "confirming our conversation", etc.), then you may want to provide this documentation to them. If it were me (and fortunately, I've escaped the insurance agency/brok...

Re: Guaranteed cost program versus self-insured group

You've pointed out one of the big concerns regarding "self-insurance". Working for an entity that is self-insured for its General and Professional Liability exposures (we're a large healthcare provider) in itself, we can provide the third party documentation (i.e. "Investment Grade&qu...

Re: Reefer breakdown - Having a claims issue..

Yes, it is common practice to do regular inspections of all trucking equipment, be it the cab or any trailer assembly. Refrigeration assemblies need regular maintenance, and that's the purpose of requiring a monthly inspection. Hate to say it, but it's just common sense.

Re: Reefer breakdown - Having a claims issue..

You as the insurance agent/broker, should have pointed out this endorsement to your client. As an insurance agent/broker, it is vitally important that you point out any specific endorsements that might limit the applicability of coverage. Using the excuse that you were unaware "because nobody r...

Re: Help with a Niche

A lot depends upon the area you live in. What industries are predominant in that area? As an example, Houston (where I live) has two major industries - oil/gas/energy, and healthcare. Each of these are highly specialized, and a "good" producer will need to know the intricacies of the cover...

So...someone else besides me things that a self-insured PEO is like an oxymoron. Good.

Re: Guaranteed cost program versus self-insured group

Interesting...a self-insured PEO. How would a potential "client" verify that you are financially viable? i.e. is your firm rated by S&P, or other third party documentation?

In other words, you're a PEO, and you're looking primarily for Rule IV employers (those with an experience rating).

Rule number one in personal auto insurance - coverage follows the vehicle.

Re: Insurable Interest question

Much depends upon the lease. If it's a triple net lease, which would require the tenant to insure the building, then there isn't a problem. If not, then this raises several legal issues for the corporation that, if the IRS gets involved, will get ugly. The IRS will question why the corporation is le...

Re: Moving To San Antonio Texas

You might want to seriously consider contacting a regional brokerage there first, rather than doing a start-up. Insurance laws are slightly different here in Texas (I live in Houston) than they are in Kalifornia (I relocated in 2005 for the benefit of my then employer -Aon, who laid us off a year an...

Many health insurance companies have "wellness" programs associated with their group health coverage. The problem is, most employees choose not to participate in these programs. It's not the doctor's fault for not trying to educate the patient (I'd hate to tell you how many times my dad's ...

Re: What Agents Like and Don't Like

Some interesting comments on the "negative" side. What I found most telling was the comment about the amount of knowledge of coverages that's required. Having worked previously on both the agency and company side for some 25+ years, I gained a broad understanding of almost all of the vario...
