Since there was another post regarding the CIC designation, I thought I'd throw this out there. IRMI offers a CRIS designation which stands for Construction Risk and Insurance Specialist. Although not as prestigious, it does appear to be legitimate because the CPCU continuing education requirements allow it to be used toward it. However I wanted to see what you guys thought. The info is here:

I know it would help but my concern is who determines whether you can title yourself something?

Re: CRIS designation
How weird that you posted this fact. I've started searching for an avenue to get a Risk Management Cert. I'm looking at Kaplan, RIM. For a long time I've wanted to check out the CRIS. Today winter is having its way with us and I had time to sign up for CRIS. IRMI has always been a very good place to purchase manuals, etc. CRIS is a very, very reasonably priced program. I bought the first module today. Most of this module is a brush up course but it never hurts to stay current and keep the old head thinking.
If anyone knows of any avenues other than Kaplan or RIM to get a full Risk Management Certificate, please tell me. There is something stirring that has me thinking I might even consider coming out of the cold and getting a real 9-5 job in the field of risk management.

IRMI does have requirements to "keep" the alphabets behind your name but it is minimal.
On the other hand to become a Fellow at RIM you need to (I believe) pay an annual dues. Also the RIM certification is broader and may even be marketable for a 9-5 job.

CRIS
My two cents;
Because IRMI and the CFMA are affiliated, the CRIS designation does hold some clout with controllers and owners of construction firms that are members of the CFMA. CFMA members are usually the larger and more sophisticated construction firms.
