Claims Specialist

Essential Functions:

  • Handles the investigation, evaluation, negotiation and disposition of serious injury and complex commercial claims, often involving litigation
  • Reviews the claim notices, lawsuits and policies to verify coverage
  • Initiates contact with insureds, claimants, medical providers, witnesses and/or attorneys to obtain information on the claim or suit
  • Documents claim files
  • Sets timely, adequate reserves in compliance with the company reserving philosophy and methodology
  • Resolves questions on coverage including additional insureds, questions on liability, compensability and claim value
  • Identifies and evaluates contractual indemnification exposure
  • Collaborates with defense counsel on action plans and litigation strategy
  • Attends depositions, hearings, mediations and trials
  • Identifies opportunities for recovery and investigates and pursues accordingly
  • Prepares bodily injury and/or property damage evaluations
  • Negotiates, settles and/or resolves claims
  • Communicates with other departments to submit referrals or share risk reports

Education & Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience
  • Eight years of claims adjusting experience
  • Insurance designations preferred

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Proven, superior knowledge of claims best practices
  • Ability to resolve the most serious and complex liability claims
  • Working knowledge of construction defect claims
  • Analytical ability and sound judgment with respect to liability and coverage
  • Excellent knowledge of insurance contracts, medical terminology and legal aspects of court procedures
  • High standards of professional conduct
  • Strong knowledge of computers and claims systems
  • Exceptional organizational and written and verbal communication skills
  • Excellent investigative and problem-solving abilities
  • Travel required; a valid driver's license with an acceptable motor vehicle report per company standards required if traveling
