Job Summary:
Markel Corporation, a Fortune 500 Company, is seeking a Surety Contract Underwriting Assistant for the Project Monitoring Unit Division. The primary responsibility for this person will be to process monthly status inquiries for all applicable contract bonds company-wide. This includes monitoring and processing all incoming and outgoing statuses on those bonds while maintaining system files in a current status at all times. The Project Monitoring Unit Underwriting Assistant is a team position working closely with other Underwriting Assistants, Claims Dept., Watch Unit, and Contract Underwriters. This position requires a person with great attention to detail, and thorough follow-through on all tasks outlined in the Project Monitoring Unit manual. Customer service skills are important in dealing with Obligees on bonded construction projects.

Job Responsibilities Include:
  • Run monthly report of Contract Status Inquiries (CSI's) to be reviewed and sent
  • Maintain and update monthly and cyclical Tracking Lists Process outgoing run – fax, mail, email
  • Process NPBR List to prepare monthly run
  • Check status on all DOT bonds and bonds in FDS
  • Contact and build relationships with Obligees for contract status monitoring once trained
  • Prioritize and process incoming CSIs – review and sort upon receipt
  • Maintain accurate structure of system files in a timely manner
  • Maintain suspense calendar other follow-up procedures
  • Provide direct support to Watch Unit, Claims Dept., Underwriting Department
  • Close bonds – straights ups and initiate those with premium adjustments
  • Prioritize and manage multiple processes simultaneously independent of oversight
  • Follow specific written & verbal procedures as outlined in the PMU Procedures Manual
  • Perform special projects and other tasks as assigned by supervisor

Qualifications/Skill Sets Required:
  • High level of proficiency with Microsoft Office – Word, Excel, Outlook; Internet Explorer
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral or schedule form
  • Use initiative to prioritize work after receiving training
  • Excellent critical thinking skills
