CNA Surety has an immediate opening for a Surety Underwriter in our Metairie, Louisiana branch office just outside of New Orleans. Under technical supervision, the Surety Underwriter is responsible for underwriting risks in a book of contract and commercial business while developing and nurturing assigned agency and broker relationships in the Louisiana and some parts of Texas. Candidate must demonstrate an understanding of underwriting fundamentals and/or Financial/Risk Analysis and make consistent and well thought out recommendations. Individual will need to effectively utilize technical data to assist and support the recommendations.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
1. Reviews bond and account submissions and financial documentation to determine acceptability of risk in accordance with company guidelines and standards.

2. Provide superior service and technical expertise to assigned agents and brokers.

3. Prepares consistent and well thought out recommendations and conclusions and escalates issues to management along with proposed solutions as necessary. Negotiates with agents to reach positive and profitable outcomes.

4. Markets products and services through agencies or through the brokerage community and makes field visits. Develops and maintains agency and/or broker relationships.

5. Notifies agencies of adverse underwriting decisions, additional requirements, and declinations.

6.Keeps current on state/territory issues and regulations, industry activity and trends and freely shares information with others.

7. Utilizes advanced functionality in relevant CNA systems to perform day-to-day activities.

8. Works with more senior underwriters or management on risks exceeding authority level or requiring special handling.

9. Other duties/tasks may be assigned.

Skills, Knowledge & Abilities:
1. Strong desire to develop knowledge and understanding of underwriting practices, policies and guidelines.

2. Demonstrated high level of technical expertise.

3. Strong interpersonal, communication and negotiation skills. Individual must have the ability to effectively interact with all levels of CNA's internal and external business partners.

4. Ability to work independently.

5. Strong analytical and problem solving skills.

6. Ability to exercise independent judgment and to make critical business decisions effectively.

7. Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite as well as other business-related software.

Education & Experience:

1. Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience required. .

2. Completion of a formal underwriting training program or minimum one year underwriting experience.
