Job Summary

The Adjusting Function is responsible for verifying policy coverage and limits. The Adjusting function investigates and evaluates damage and/or liability; estimates damages, losses, or total indemnity; sets and maintains reserves; and/or negotiates and settles claims. Property claims involve resolution of first and/or third party property-related claims.

This job is responsible for investigating, negotiating, and settling a large homeowner claim involving highly complex structure losses as a result of, for example, fire, water or theft. This individual handles claims that typically require alternative housing during the restoration of the property. This individual travels to the loss site to conduct a thorough analysis. This individual reviews the insurance policy, evaluates damages, determines loss coverage, and authorizes payments. This individual delivers compassionate service that is fast, fair and easy to ensure customer retention. The individual provides work guidance and direction to less senior employees and provides mentoring and coaching to the team. The individual works independently, prioritizes the individual's own responsibilities, and manages the individual's own workload. The individual consistently meets band level behaviors, production, quality and/or customer service goals.

Key Responsibilities

Customer Service

  • Makes and maintains a connection with the customer by understanding and meeting their needs; serves the customer with empathy; and follows up to ensure that customer needs have been met
  • Manages, researches, and resolves highly complex customer communications, concerns, conflicts or issues
  • Reviews customer satisfaction results; recommends, designs, and implements personal and business unit action plans

File Documentation and Reporting

  • Summarizes documents and enters into claim system notes
  • Documents a claim file with notes, evaluations and decision making process
  • May handle first notice of loss of water damage claims

Coverage, Liability and Evaluation

  • Investigates, reviews, determines and verifies highly complex coverage/policy information
  • Provides coverage explanation to customer
  • Reviews files and make recommendations to refer files to Home Office for escalation
  • Acts as a resource to MCO on highly complex claim/coverage matters

Damage Estimating

  • Prepares/reviews/approves highly complex damage estimate
  • Reinspects loss with repair contractor
  • Prepares, reviews, reconciles, triages, and/or approves supplements
  • Handles ALE (additional living expense) claims
  • Inspects and estimates damage in a dwelling
  • Handles and negotiates highly complex claims that include Public Adjuster involvement
  • May handle claims involved in litigation
  • Reviews mitigation bills
  • Adheres to applicable compliance standards
  • Negotiation and Settlement Guidance
  • Negotiates and settles claims in accordance with business unit best practices
  • Other Projects and Responsibilities
  • May participate in one or more highly complex special assignments
  • May serve as a committee team lead or as a committee team member on a large, complex project
  • Conducts subrogation investigations
  • Researches or responds to or resolves highly complex compliance issues
  • May serve as a team lead
  • Reinspects highly complex damage estimates and provides quality evaluation coaching
  • May lead roundtable and/or calibration discussions
  • Fills in for the FPL as needed
  • Leads training sessions for the team
Job Qualifications
  • Bachelors degree in related field preferred or equivalent experience
  • Ability to interact effectively, and coach others on interacting effectively, with internal or external customers and act with empathy
  • Applies highly advanced knowledge of insurance policy, coverage, and regulation
  • Applies advanced knowledge of claim processes, policies, procedures, claim systems, coverage, liability, damage estimating, and/or settlement, and adherence to applicable legal compliance standards
  • Applies advanced industry knowledge to discipline practices, including best practices, to support the business unit
  • Applies advanced knowledge of analytical procedures to reconcile, manipulate, and recognize patterns of data
  • Applies highly advanced knowledge of problem solving and preparation of complex reports for analysis
  • Applies highly advanced ability to leverage learned technical skills in support of team objectives
  • Applies highly advanced negotiation and/or arbitration skills
  • Applies highly advanced conflict management and problem resolution skills in managing internal and external customer relationships
  • Applies highly advanced problem solving skills to continuously improve business outcomes
  • Ability to assist leadership in achieving business unit objectives
  • Applies highly advanced knowledge of training facilitation and coaching skills
  • Ability to investigate, evaluate, negotiate and settle highly complex claims
  • Provides highly advanced individual decision making within authority limits
  • Works within highly complex assignments requiring specialized knowledge in breadth and/or depth in area of expertise
  • Has and maintains all appropriate licenses and registrations for the role per state requirements
  • This position has a competitve starting at $51,000
