Compensation Data

The starting salary for this position is $59,500 commensurate with experience.

Job Summary

Responsible for the review and evaluation of larger, more complex cases for new business proposals and in-force renewal business. Directly or indirectly involved in more difficult rating calculations with a greater degree of financial impact which may require discussion with senior leadership. Additional job functions include the modification of existing accounts. contract revisions, and other policyowner service work having a high level of risk and significant financial impact to the company. Mentorship of lower level underwriters including case reviews, evaluations and approval of work.

Key Responsibilities
  • Review and manipulate census data for input into various rating tools generating manual rates
  • Analyze data related to the risk being underwritten for small cases, to determine what benefits, if any, can be offered and at what cost (rating)
  • Using AB’s workflow management tools, thoroughly document the thought processes to support decisions made re and thought processes used regarding specific cases
  • Conducts research to secure additional data needed to make determinations on benefits and premiums.
  • Reviews requests for master policy changes to determine eligibility.
  • Communicates with policy owners, applicants, brokers, agencies, and/or other sources concerning underwriting decisions and procedures.
  • Develop credibility with sales force, brokers, as well as internal and external customers.
  • Respond timely and accurately to requests made to the underwriting team while maintaining positive relationships with our internal and external customers through effective written and verbal communication.
  • Prepares proposal and/or offer information and coordinates final proposal presentation, including preparation of all required exhibits
  • Makes recommendations to management regarding account analysis and underwriting risk decisions at and above authority level
  • Engaged in process improvement by continually looking for better ways to get the job done
  • Create spreadsheets and exhibits for internal and external customers
  • Involvement in projects having direct or indirect impact on group underwriting
  • Mentor less experience team members by providing guidance and expertise
  • Lead or assist in training sessions
  • Authority to review and approve proposals up to 2,000 eligible lives

Education and Experience


  • Minimum of 4 years of Group Life & Health underwriting experience required
  • Advanced knowledge of group insurance products preferred
  • Advanced knowledge of Allstate’s systems and applications as they relate to group underwriting preferred
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Business or related field experience

The candidate(s) offered this position will be required to submit to a background investigation, which includes a drug screen.
