Job Description Summary
The Credit Analyst role reports to VP, Credit Risk Management. The role is responsible to produce account, prospect and industry credit reports and information to manage the credit risk exposure created by Commercial Lines loss sensitive insurance programs. Also responsible to analyze information and develop strategic marketing and underwriting decisions consistent with CL credit and collateral guidelines. Generates relevant and timely industry information. Assists in the development of collateral alternatives and the development of an effective credit risk management system, including pro-active management information reporting, monitoring of credit and portfolio exposures, and modeling & forecasting tools. May act as a tutor and resource to newer, less experienced analysts within the department. Will be tasked to independently resolve difficult issues - make recommendations around how to protect the company from credit risk and help implement enhancements to our management information/account reporting procedures and processes.

Primary Job Duties & Responsibilities
  • Function as the primary Credit Risk Management analyst/contact for an assigned Region (s) and Industry Sector, for agents, brokers, customers and business units on the credit risk exposure of accounts.
  • Perform credit analysis of companies (prospects and customers) within assigned Industry Sectors, and produce accurate and timely credit information & reports used to develop and recommend sound marketing and underwriting decisions.
  • At the direction of management, handle credit approval requests including, but not limited to, decisions related to waivers, working cash and incurred retro structures and collateral returns.
  • Properly document all credit related decisions. Enter all decisions in the CRM account management spreadsheet.
  • At the direction of Management, provide support and guidance to underwriting and marketing staff, as well as Credit Risk Management personnel, on credit and/or collateral related issues.
  • Participate with marketing and underwriting, including calls on clients and prospects as appropriate, in the renewal and new business process consistent with commercial lines growth and retention goals.
  • Facilitate resolution of credit-related issues in support of retention and new business goals, while protecting the company from inappropriate credit risk.
  • Anticipate required analysis of renewal accounts in advance of AE notification.
  • Perform target marketing research and gather competitive information on a business group, industry, region, or account specific basis. In this capacity, identify new product and cross-selling opportunities within the Travelers Group; develop, promote and implement collateral alternatives and procedures.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships and communications with external and internal contacts including investment community contacts, brokers, clients, marketing & underwriting, billing & collections, and management regarding credit risk, account documentation, and collateral issues.
  • Comfort working with all levels of prospect and customer management teams. Lead credit related discussions with brokers, clients and prospects.
  • Develop alternative financial modeling and analysis techniques to address unique exposures, clients or industries.
  • Identify and resolve reporting and/or process issues. Develop, create and implement new, value-added processes and techniques.
  • Advise, train and assist in the development of Financial Analysts and less experienced Industry Analysts in credit analysis, accounting theory, insurance principles, account documentation and collateral guidelines and procedures and assist in the on-going process of updating and improving training curriculum, manuals and programs.
  • Evaluate current systems and methodologies which support the credit analysis process.
  • Suggest and implement improvements and enhancements as necessary.
  • Assist in the analysis, development and implementation of new procedures and systems to meet corporate and statutory requirements.
  • Assist in controlling credit risk by actively managing, reporting on and maintaining assigned Region's collateral and account documentation activity.
  • Identify collateral, escrow & documentation deficiencies. Recommend and implement solutions and options.
  • Assist Billing and Collections in responding to client and broker requests for collateral updates, exchanges, reduction letters and drawings on collateral.
  • Work with Billing and Collections to manage collection of outstanding receivables and controlling financial exposures.
  • Regularly attend client company investor presentations.
  • Communicate findings and recommendations. Join and participate in industry associations as appropriate.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in finance, accounting, economics or a similar pertinent discipline required.
  • Minimum of 5 years experience in increasingly responsible positions in credit risk management, financial analysis and/or risk assessment required.

Education, Work Experience, & Knowledge
  • 10 years experience in increasingly responsible positions in credit risk management, financial analysis and/or risk assessment preferred.
  • Master's Degree preferred.
  • Financial analysis, risk assessment and portfolio management background.
  • Knowledge of banking industry.
  • Understanding of trust accounts and investments.
  • Experience reviewing, negotiating and finalizing legal documentation working with internal and external legal and business contacts.
  • Strong analytical and quantitative skills and ability to balance timeliness and accuracy.
  • Ability to communicate effectively to all levels.
  • Customer service orientation.
  • Solid knowledge of assigned industry segment.
  • Exposure to marketing and underwriting.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and in a team environment.

Licensing or Certificates
  • Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) or other professional designation encouraged.
