Job Summary

 

The Senior Reinsurance Claims Manager works with a team of experienced staff that handle casualty reinsurance assumed claims involving alleged injury due to asbestos, pollution, product defects, and other “long tail” liabilities.  The coverage issues are often complex requiring an analysis of Allstate’s contractual liabilities, knowledge of the legal issues and standard industry practices that impact coverage under these contracts, and an ability to “issue spot” potential problems with the claims for coverage.

 

   
The Senior Manager provides the claims staff with guidance on contract interpretation, identification of potential coverage issues, and the resolution of disputes.  The Senior Manager works with the staff on prioritizing workloads, as well as implementing procedures for processing claims, maintaining claim files, and responding to reinsurance billings.  When needed, the Senior Manager works with the claims staff on reporting and responding to retrocessionaires. Guidance is provided through day-to-day management, as well as through training.   

 

In addition to working with the claim staff and management, the Senior Manager also works with representatives from other insurance companies, intermediaries (agents and brokers), and inhouse and outside counsel.  In cases involving disputed claims, the Senior Manager is required to appear for deposition and testify in court or at an arbitration hearing. The Senior Manager will be expected to represent Allstate in various reinsurance industry organizations.

 

 

The Senior Manager is a Home-Based Work Employee and, therefore, can live anywhere within the United States (with a few exceptions).  The Senior Manager will use tools like Microsoft Teams and Zoom to stay productive and connected to the team of claims handlers and to management.
 

Key Responsibilities

 

  • Manage a team of claims staff by providing guidance and training regarding:
  • Analyzing, evaluating, and processing reinsurance claims involving significant exposure and complex issues; 
  • Maintaining reinsurance claim files in a timely and accurate manner; and
  • Effectively managing caseloads with work completed in the established timeframe;   
  • Review, understand, and apply relevant provisions of casualty reinsurance contracts;
  • Determine coverage based upon the facts of the claim, the reinsurance contract language, industry custom and practice, and relevant caselaw;
  • Remain current on caselaw and significant developments in the insurance and reinsurance industry, and apply such knowledge to the management of the claims staff;
  • Manage claim audits;
  • Develop creative strategies and solutions for problematic claims and accounts;
  • Manage disputes, with the ability to negotiate complex matters;
  • Testify in a deposition and/or an arbitration hearing when required to do so;
  • Coordinate projects as assigned by management;
  • Provide written and verbal reports to management;
  • Develop training programs; and
  • Other duties may be assigned.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities/Experience

 

•    Bachelor’s degree is required, and a law degree is a plus;
•    10 + years related experience handling highly complex casualty claims;
•    Commercial experience with strong knowledge of reinsurance claims, contracts, and coverage issues;
•    Strong written and verbal communication skills including the ability to effectively collaborate with others at all organizational levels, as well as outside counsel and other parties;
•    Good organizational and project management skills with the ability to handle multiple concurrent assignments in a timely manner;
•    Strong problem solving, analytical, and decision-making skills; 
•    Experience negotiating disputes;
•    Ability and willingness to develop and implement creative solutions to complex problems;
•    Ability to work independently at a high level with peers, management, and other departments, as well as in a team environment, where appropriate; 
•    Ability to learn and utilize multiple claim systems and computer software; and
•    Knowledge of Microsoft Office, including Excel, Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, and Teams.

Compensation Data

 

Compensation range for this position is $130,000 - $170,000 per year, based on experience and qualifications.

The candidate(s) offered this position will be required to submit to a background investigation, which includes a drug screen.
