Compensation Overview

The hourly salary range provided for this position is a nationwide market range and represents a broad range of salaries for this role across the country. The actual hourly rate for this position will be determined by a number of factors, including the scope, complexity and location of the role; the skills, education, training, credentials and experience of the candidate; and other conditions of employment. As part of our comprehensive compensation and benefits program, employees are also eligible for performance-based cash incentive awards.

What Is the Opportunity?

This is a temporary, part-time position.

Responsible for the profitability, growth and retention of assigned book of business within a territory/territories consistent with overall business line objectives.

Marketing and Underwriting Responsibilities Typically Include:

Underwriting new and renewal business on the most complex accounts. Marketing and developing new and existing relationships with agents and brokers including principals and national brokers. Acting as a role model to identify and drive market penetration objectives and seek out cross-sell opportunities. Developing new and existing territories and relationships. Independently managing assigned territory and book of business, ranging up to the most complex accounts. Taking a portfolio view of their book of business to manage profitability. Providing coaching, mentoring and strategic counsel on underwriting (e.g. rate, retention, new business). Developing and maintaining agency and broker relationships with a regional, zonal, or countrywide scope. Helping to drive strategic BU initiatives within region, partnering with Managing Director. Those in this role have the highest level of production, technical and sales expertise in the region/group and work across the business unit (beyond region/group). Seen across the Bond & Specialty Insurance (Bond & SI) org and/or Travelers enterprise as an industry expert and resource on a regional/and or national level. Demonstrates the deepest level of industry knowledge. Advanced knowledge of analytics and tools. Interprets, applies and advises using expert knowledge.

What Will You Do?

Underwriting and Pricing:

  • Consistently underwrites the most complex accounts and risks and considers different approaches toward risks to maximize profitability (e.g., pricing, retention, endorsements, limits, indemnity, and security).In support of business objectives, uses good judgment in making decisions within own underwriting authority and may provide input on more complex accounts. Is the key region/group resource for underwriters of all experience levels including highly experienced AEOs. Acts as more than a technical resource - provides coaching, mentoring, and strategic counsel on production technical and pricing challenges of the highest technical complexity levels. Initiates and leads collaborative discussions on account and business strategies. Can easily articulate whether or not account is within or outside underwriting appetite/strategy, along with the reasons for that determination. Is seen as a teacher to other underwriters including those that are highly experienced regarding appetite/strategy. Independently sets account strategy, and frequently partners with MD to set strategy for the group/Region BU. Proactively collaborates and partners with regional and Bond & SI underwriting officers on highly complex underwriting initiatives/challenges. Acts as a key leader for Bond & SI in Bond or cross-enterprise major projects and initiatives which involve things such as talent development and coaching, diversity, technology & systems, analytics, industry analysis, emerging markets/products etc. Initiates collaborative discussions.

Distribution and Agency Management:

  • Effectively manages assigned agents/brokers by developing and maintaining new and existing relationships to write and retain accounts consistent with business unit appetite. Frequently meets with agents/brokers and insureds in order to build and maintain business relationship.


  • With the highest level of independence, uses a consultative marketing / sales culture and successfully employs consultative selling approach to market products to agents and brokers. Consistently achieves and surpasses the highest level sales and marketing results within their business and agency/broker visibility goals. Identifies and captures new business opportunities and effectively cross sells market segment and Travelers products/businesses. Develops agency sales/business plan and frequently partners with MD to develop region/group sales plan. May lead underwriting/agency meetings. Regularly attends agency/broker events and/or industry functions and plays a leading role at those events/functions.


  • Resolves significant conflict within and outside the organization without damaging relationships; is routinely sought out by others as a knowledge resource; coaches / mentors others regarding successful negotiations.

Executes Strategy and Drives Results:

  • With an increased level of independence, develops and executes on a plan to meet business objectives. Anticipates and identifies complex underwriting/marketing problems, thoroughly analyzes available information and makes timely, practical decisions.

Business Planning and Collaboration:

  • Fosters collaboration within the business unit and across the enterprise. Seeks enterprise-wide solutions to business problems. Assists less experienced employees when appropriate.

Leading Others:

  • Participates in the training of underwriters at all levels. Develops others and takes initiative for personal development. May coach / mentor employees at all levels of experience, including highly experienced AEOs as a day-to-day key accountability.

  • Identifies current or future problems or opportunities, analyzes, synthesizes and compares information to understand issues, identifies cause/effect relationships and explores alternative solutions to support sound decision making
  • Understands and uses financial information, tools and expense management principles to accomplish day-to-day work and maximize profitability.

Relationship Management:

  • Seeks out, builds, fosters and maintains productive relationships, networks or alliances to meet goals and achieve results.
  • Valid drivers license or alternate means of personal transportation.

What is a Must Have?

  • 5 years of underwriting experience in management liability or surety required.
