finding the right hire is the most difficult thing to do now. The kids of the Occupy Wall street, Obama entitlement generations will be extremely difficult to get to sell anything or for that matter show up for work and communicate with others other than texting or email. I have not seen much Grit in these younger kids coming out of college now. Maybe another subject for another day!

Seeing Sarah’s comment and the number of likes compels me to respond, although I’m not surprised. To the other points below, those baby boomers/corporate establishment who haven’t had to deal with soaring costs of living/housing, massive student debt, the increased power special interests hold, etc are already well positioned in home-ownership and financial stability to be pointing fingers. Not to be political, but this is the same generation that get their economic beliers from the Cato Institute and Heritage Foundation, while also believing in the fallacy of trickle down economics. I’m not even Gen Y, but Gen X, and I’m tired of hearing the “Obama generation/entitlement” analogies. I’ve been in UWing for 11 yrs (LM, CB, TRV) and there is a huge layer of fat in middle management (both agency side and carrier side) sucking up 150K salaries (and bonuses) not doing anything but resting on their titles. Think about that and consider walking in the younger generation’s shoes before you start blasting them.

Please. I am sick of tired of the establishment talking about how OWS, Obama and entitlements. As long as it doesn’t effect your money pot right? I work with these old timers who just push stuff on others desks and think that is work. As an UW for a Fortune 500 company, the old are the ones that don’t do anything, they just complain like Sarah. Hate to break it to the old folks, but YOU are the reason college kids can’t find a job, afford a place to live. Your generation elected the idiots that lead to the culture of hate, rage and “get in line after me” mentality. You want these younger kids to be appreciative of the sh!t sandwhich you feed them. Hypocrites.

show up for work and communicate? It’s the middle aged account managers that are the laziest people in the world. It’s criminal to take commission on accounts when all they are doing is pushing paper. You haven’t seen grit because you wouldn’t know what it looked like if it hit you in the face. Your generation created the culture that lead to this countries disfunction and then try to blame it on young people? Stop watching Fox News all day, pick up a book or look at the greatest innovations of the last 30 years. Most of them accomplished by people under 30. If you forgot, Obama destroyed both opponents in his elections, not because of some conspiracy or “left wing media”, but just maybe, just maybe the country agrees with the vision, not your twisted view of reality

How about a little decorum and a little less ageism (going both directions) and political generalizations? I’m Gen Y. President Obama was elected when I was 25 and already several years into my career. I can safely say he’s had very little impact on my personality and work philosophy. Also, I’ve worked with a lot of Boomers who have been tremendous mentors and hard workers. They will be missed as they transition out of the workforce. Collectively as an industry we are looking at a tremendous loss of knowledge and experience in the near future. Let’s try to respect each other. Generational tensions are certainly nothing new.
