Quality Control Inspector Arrested

February 10, 2003

CDI Investigators, with help from the Los Angeles Police Department, arrested Tom Robinson, 54, who has been charged with six felony counts of insurance fraud related to an April 28, 1998 industrial injury.

According to investigators, on April 28, 1998, Robinson was working as a Quality Control Inspector for Cherokee International in Irvine, Calif., when he allegedly injured his back while picking up some material. The injury was reported and Robinson was referred to a physician for evaluation and treatment. In 2001, back surgery was performed on Robinson followed by physical therapy but he continued to have complaints of pain. During Robinson’s deposition he allegedly stated he always used a cane to walk because of his symptoms. In Feb. 2001 through March 2001, subrosa videotape showed Robinson walking without the use of a cane and moving around without signs of discomfort. The physician who had treated Robinson viewed the videotape and felt Robinson had deceived him. The physician had rated Robinson as 100 percent disabled, but after reviewing the tape, he rated him as only 24 percent disabled.

If Robinson received a 100 percent disability rating, Zenith Insurance Company would have had to pay him $20,000 a year for the rest of his life.
