David Daniel was named chairman of the Independent Insurance Agents & Brokers of America (Big “I”). He will lead the organization as chairman for the 2009-2010 term. Daniel is president of Daniel & Eustis Insurance in Baton Rouge, La.

Prior to his election to the executive committee by IIABA’s national board of directors in 2004, Daniel served on the board of the Independent Insurance Agents & Brokers of Louisiana (IIABL) for eight years and became president in 1997. On the national level, Daniel has also served on IIABA’s Technical Affairs Committee and was chairman of the Big “I” Governance and Communications Task Force.

The Big “I” also installed J. Michael “Mike” Miley of Gibson Insurance Group as the chairman-elect. Miley began his insurance career in 1973 and joined Gibson Insurance Group in 1983. He began his involvement with the association at the local and state level, serving as president of the Independent Insurance Agents of Indiana from 1995 to 1996. In 1997 Miley was elected to Big “I” Board of Directors representing Indiana. The Independent Insurance Agents of Indiana has twice named him the Indiana Agent of the Year.

Lockton added Scott Curtis as an account executive in its St. Louis, Mo., office.

Curtis has more than 20 years of insurance and risk management experience with expertise in property and international insurance programs. He has extensive experience in manufacturing, retail, health care, higher education and public entities.

Prior to joining Lockton in September 2009, Curtis spent more than three years with Marsh as the property and international practice leader. He ran the practice and managed large property programs and multinational accounts for Marsh. Prior to that, Curtis was with Emerson Electric Co. as manager, corporate insurance and FM Global as an account manager.

Curtis holds both the Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU) and Associate in Risk Management (ARM) designations.

Brian Duperreault, president and CEO of Marsh & McLennan Cos. Inc., has extended his employment with MMC through January 2014. Duperreault has held this position since January 2008. Prior to joining MMC, Duperreault served as CEO and later chairman of ACE Ltd., and in senior executive positions with American International Group.

W. R. Berkley Corp. appointed Carol J. LaPunzina as senior vice president of human resources. In her newly established position, she will oversee human resource operations and personnel development.

LaPunzina began her career with W.R. Berkley more than 11 years ago and brings legal, human resources and personnel related experience to her new role. Since 2004, she has served as senior vice president, general counsel and secretary of Berkley Insurance Co.

The company also appointed Sandra C. Nelson as president of Monitor Liability Managers. Nelson most recently served as executive vice president of Monitor – an underwriting management company specializing in professional and executive liability insurance – and has been with the company since its founding in 1992.

GAB Robins North America Inc. promoted Carl Mussenden to senior vice president, third party administration field management.

Mussenden joined GAB Robins in 2007 as vice president, workers’ compensation product line director, and over time took on additional responsibilities including the Quality and Performance department, product line management and field operations.

Prior to joining GAB Robins, Mussenden served as vice president, workers’ compensation claims for CNA. Prior to CNA, he held leadership positions with PHICO and Penn National Insurance Company. He began his career with Aetna Casualty and Surety.

Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon has re-appointed Jack D. Atterberry of Jefferson City to the Workers’ Compensation Determination Review Board.

Atterberry is vice president for governmental relations for Associated General Contractors of Missouri. He served in similar positions for the Council of Construction Employers and the Builders’ Association of Missouri.

Atterberry’s term ends March 3, 2011.

The Travelers Cos. Inc. appointed Scott Higgins as president of Travelers Construction. Higgins most recently served as chief underwriting officer for Travelers Middle Market business units. He joined Travelers in 1991, and has served in a variety of positions within the company.

In his new role, Higgins will look for opportunities to grow the Travelers Construction business through disciplined underwriting and specialized claim and risk control services. He will also look for ways to further strengthen Travelers’ relationships with its network of independent agents and brokers.

Stephen Whelan was named vice president of commercial and financial risks for the The Hartford Financial Services Group’s Hartford Financial Products (HFP) division. In this newly created position, Whelan will oversee HFP’s entire domestic insurance portfolio for larger risks, including commercial, financial services, diversified, REIT and transactional risk accounts.

Whelan joins The Hartford from American International Group, where he served in a number of roles of increasing responsibility, including, most recently, executive vice president and senior regional executive in AIG’s executive liability area.
