David Daniel was named chairman of the Independent Insurance Agents & Brokers of America (Big “I”). He will lead the organization as chairman for the 2009-2010 term.

Daniel is president of Daniel & Eustis Insurance in Baton Rouge, La.

Prior to his election to the executive committee by IIABA’s national board of directors in 2004, Daniel served on the board of the Independent Insurance Agents & Brokers of Louisiana (IIABL) for eight years and became president in 1997. On the national level, Daniel has also served on IIABA’s Technical Affairs Committee and was chairman of the Big “I” Governance and Communications Task Force.

The Big “I” also installed J. Michael “Mike” Miley of Gibson Insurance Group as chairman-elect.

Miley began his insurance career in 1973 and joined Gibson Insurance Group in 1983.

He began his involvement with the association at the local and state level, serving as president of the Independent Insurance Agents of Indiana from 1995 to 1996. In 1997 Miley was elected to Big “I” Board of Directors representing Indiana. The Independent Insurance Agents of Indiana has twice named him the Indiana Agent of the Year.

Independent insurance brokerage firm and Assurex Global partner, Roach Howard Smith & Barton (RHSB), has added sales executive Brand Daves to the commercial insurance division of its Fort Worth, Texas, office. Daves joins RHSB as an assistant vice president.

Daves has a professional background in business, namely in the construction industry, including more than eight years of client service experience.

Prior to joining RHSB, he worked as a claims representative for a large insurance agency, where he handled commercial, industrial and residential property claims and was consistently ranked as one of the company’s leading producers of claim settlements.

Daves’ professional history also includes his work as a general contractor with a North Texas-based company, where he coordinated job sites and specialized in industrial hygiene, airflow abatement and mitigation of water damage.

Texas Mutual Insurance Company has hired Steve Math as senior vice president of underwriting. The company also announced that Cecily Gallagher, former senior vice president of underwriting and actuarial services, has assumed a new role as corporate actuary and chief risk officer.

Math will oversee the company’s underwriting, marketing and loss prevention services.

Gallagher will provide actuarial analysis of long-term and critical strategic issues for senior management and the board. She will also oversee the pricing and reserving actuarial function, head up risk quantification analysis, and assist with risk mitigation efforts.

Math most recently served as senior vice president and chief actuary of Argo Insurance Group, the parent company of Argonaut Specialty. Prior to that, he served in chief actuary roles at ACE Insurance Group and CNA.

Prior to joining Texas Mutual in 1998, Gallagher worked as a consultant and principal with Tillinghast/Towers Perrin for almost 20 years.

Brian Duperreault, president and CEO of Marsh & McLennan Cos. Inc., has extended his employment with MMC through January 2014. Duperreault has held this position since January 2008.

Prior to joining MMC, Duperreault served as CEO and later chairman of ACE Ltd., and in senior executive positions with American International Group.

Dorothy Martinez has joined London American Risk Specialists Inc. as a senior broker in London American’s newly created binding authority division in Dallas, Texas.

Joining Martinez in Dallas is Laura Kenebrew, formerly of Capstone Underwriters, who will serve as an underwriter and will work with Martinez on quoting and placing contract business.

Martinez has extensive underwriting experience, and previously held production and executive positions with several Texas MGA operations.

The additions are part of London American’s expansion of its Dallas underwriting division. The company expects to hire several more underwriters in the newly created underwriting/binding authority department.

The Travelers Cos. Inc. has appointed Scott Higgins as president of Travelers Construction. Higgins most recently served as chief underwriting officer for Travelers Middle Market business units.

He joined Travelers in 1991 and has served in a variety of positions within the company.

Stephen Whelan has been named vice president of commercial and financial risks for the The Hartford Financial Services Group’s Hartford Financial Products (HFP) division. In this newly created position, Whelan will oversee HFP’s entire domestic insurance portfolio for larger risks, including commercial, financial services, diversified, REIT and transactional risk accounts.

Whelan joins The Hartford from American International Group, where he served in a number of roles of increasing responsibility, including, most recently, executive vice president and senior regional executive in AIG’s executive liability area.
