Johnston, R.I.-based business property insurer FM Global said Vice Chairman Ruud Bosman will retire in November after 40 years with the company. The retiring Bosman joined FM Global in 1971 and was elected to its board of directors and named its vice chairman in 2009 where he had overall responsibility for all of FM Global’s operations, engineering, underwriting, marketing and claims activities.

Maine Governor Paul LePage has chosen Eric Cioppa to be the next superintendent of the Maine Bureau of Insurance. Cioppa has been serving as acting superintendent since June when former Superintendent Mila Kofman resigned.

Heffernan Insurance Brokers, an independent insurance brokerage headquartered in Walnut Creek, Calif., has hired Catherine Torsney to join its Manhattan office in New York as senior vice president and director of its fine art, jewelry and rare collections practice.

Boston-based broker and service provider William Gallagher Associates (WGA) announced David Bardelli has joined the firm as a senior vice president in the property/casualty practice. He will serve as the new casualty practice leader, providing resources to WGA’s large corporate clients on how to effectively manage risk. Bardelli joins WGA from Zurich Insurance where he held a senior position in the global casualty unit.

The Hanover Insurance Group Inc. has appointed Meredith Lavallee as personal lines territory sales manager for the company’s Massachusetts market. Lavallee will work out of The Hanover’s headquarters in Worcester, Mass. Lavallee joined The Hanover in July 2011 and most recently served as a regional director in the national distribution group at Travelers Insurance Companies.

Homesite Insurance Co., a Boston-based property insurer, appointed Chubb veteran Andrew McElwee Jr. as executive vice president and chief underwriting officer. He will be responsible for the underwriting profit of Homesite’s personal lines portfolio. Most recently McElwee was the chief operating officer of Chubb Personal Insurance.

Aon Risk Solutions, the global risk management business of Aon Corp., appointed Marsh veteran John Moskal as executive vice president and regional sales director of the Pittsburgh office. Moskal comes from Marsh, where he spent more than 30 years. The company also announced Philip O’Brien has been appointed resident sales director of the New England and upstate New York region.

Arbella Insurance Group, a Quincy, Mass.-based provider of business and personal insurance for the New England region, hired Robin Maddox as territory manager for the state of New Hampshire. Maddox previously worked as the New Hampshire regional director for Cincinnati Insurance Co.

Independent reinsurance broker Holborn Corp. has appointed Arthur Dougherty as a senior vice president in the firm’s New York City headquarters.

Dougherty is an industry veteran, having worked more than three decades in the reinsurance business. He comes from Pearl River, N.Y.-based U.S. RE Corp., where he managed the U.S. domestic production and placement of treaty reinsurance, and focused on property catastrophe business arising from the Gulf States.

Next Generation Insurance Group, a specialty agency with offices in Boston and Phoenix that focuses on the collegiate and young adult markets, has appointed Dennis Wentworth as senior vice president. He will be responsible for college and university relations. Wentworth spent 11 years at Sallie Mae, most recently as president of Sallie Mae National Sales.
