Safeco Taps 20-Year Veteran to Lead Business in Eastern United States

Peter Dunn has been named senior vice president of SAFECO Insurance Company, responsible for property and casualty insurance operations in the Atlantic Zone.

A 20-year industry veteran, Dunn will lead SAFECO’s businesses in a broad section of the country that incorporates the entire Atlantic coast, most of the Midwest, Texas and the Gulf states. Dunn, 42, begins his new assignment on Aug. 1.

He will be based in Hartford, Conn. Reporting directly to Dunn will be the vice presidents of six SAFECO region offices — representing approximately 2,600 employees who service more than $2 billion written premiums produced by 4,000 independent insurance agencies in the eastern half of the United States.

Dunn began his insurance career with Allstate in 1981 after earning a bachelor’s degree in economics from Holy Cross College in Worcester, Mass. In 1987, he joined Covenant Insurance Co. as second vice president and director of personal lines Product Management. After Covenant was acquired by Indianapolis-based American States Insurance, Dunn held a succession of increasingly responsible positions including assistant vice president of Product Management, and general management posts in the company’s Indiana Division and Great Lakes Region offices. SAFECO acquired American States in 1997. The following year, Dunn was transferred to Connecticut and promoted to vice president of SAFECO’s new Hartford Region.
