NY Insurance Dept. Upgrades Website

The New York State Insurance Department recently added new features to its Licensing Information Online Network (LION) system, which will eventually allow agents to apply for licenses, or for licenses to be terminated, over the Internet.

The LION system functions in conjunction with other sites which are part of the National Association of Insurance Commissioners’ network, notably its Producer information Network, and its National Insurance Producer Registry, and will enable agents to submit one application with all the necessary information, which can then be retransmitted to the insurance department of any states which are part of the system.

New York’s new capabilities are part of the changes mandated by the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act to make insurance agent licensing more uniform, and multi-state licensing easier.

The Department also announced that its “healthyNY” website now offers a Spanish language version. The site provides information on health insurance for small businesses.
