New York Governor George Pataki’s office announced that private funeral services were held Sunday for Neil D. Levin, who headed the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey prior to his death in the collapse of the WTC. His body was recently recovered by rescue workers.
Before taking over as head of the Port Authority in April 2001, Levin had served as New York State Insurance Superintendent since 1997, following his successful tenure as New York State Superintendent of Banks.
“At Insurance, Mr. Levin helped protect consumers through more effective and efficient regulation, including creation of the first-ever Capital Markets Bureau. He modernized the agency by emphasizing the use of new technology, facilitating the online submission of rate and form filings, online financial reporting and the visionary move towards risk-based examination policies,” said the announcement.
“Neil was my friend, and I miss him,” Governor Pataki stated. “As we continue to pray for those families who have yet to recover their loved ones despite the heroic efforts of the firefighters and rescue workers, it is my hope that Neil can now rest in peace. Neil’s approach to public service was grounded on a passion for customer service, for efficiency and for challenging his staff to deliver results more quickly and effectively than ever before. He brought boundless energy, curiosity and a love for new ideas to his post.”
