The Hartford Named to Business Ethics’ List of 100 Best Corporate Citizens

April 2, 2003

The Hartford Financial Services Group announced that the company has been honored by Business Ethics magazine as one of the country’s 100 best corporate citizens.

“For nearly 200 years, the foundation of The Hartford’s success has been based on a culture of honesty, integrity and trust,” Chairman and CEO Ramani Ayer commented. “Every day our 29,000 employees demonstrate that doing the right thing – the honest thing – on behalf of our customers and business partners leads to superior business performance. We are gratified to be recognized for our achievements.”

Hartford’s bulletin described the Business Ethics ranking, now in its fourth year, as “based on quantitative measures of corporate service to seven stakeholder groups, including investors, employees, customers, and the community. Researchers analyzed data from the nation’s 1000 largest public companies. Among the factors they considered were pollution emissions, regulatory problems, lawsuits, employee benefits and charitable contributions.

“The result is a list of 100 firms that have programs and practices that ‘were better than nine out of 10 peer firms,’ says Business Ethics. Statistical analysis for the list was done by Sandra Waddock and Samuel Graves of the Carroll School of Management at Boston College in Chestnut Hill, Mass. Social ratings were provided by KLD Research & Analytics of Boston, a research firm serving socially responsible investors.”

The full list of the 100 Best Corporate Citizens story will appear in the spring issue of Business Ethics.
