PIACT Prepares for 2004 Annual Convention

February 10, 2004

The Professional Insurance Agents of Connecticut Inc.’s 2004 annual convention is scheduled for March 16-17, 2004, at Foxwoods Resort Casino, Mashantucket, Conn. Last year nearly 500 insurance industry
representatives attended the event, and of those nearly half participated in education seminars.

“PIACT’s annual convention has become Connecticut’s largest gathering of insurance professionals and it continues to grow each year,” stated Robert B. Gyle, IV, CIC, president of PIACT. “The venue offers participants the chance to come together and discuss the issues that are affecting their businesses and exchange ideas and solutions to problems they encounter.”

The two-day event will host a comprehensive trade show, networking opportunities, an awards luncheon and an opening night gala-to offer participants a chance to meet PIACT’s new leadership and socialize with colleagues.

“Insurance professionals looking to earn continuing education credits will have plenty of opportunities during this year’s convention,” noted Diane L. Eger, director of PIACT and chair of the Convention Committee. “Topics range from the new world of Internet exposures to the responsibilities of insurance agents to the dilemmas associated with additional insureds and more.”

The CE-approved courses include the following:
— Insuring the Internet Exposures, led by Jerry Milton, CIC, will help participants understand the ins and outs of insuring the new exposures associated with the Internet-such as data damage, denial of service attacks, electronic theft, extortion and more.
— During Responsibilities of Insurance Agents, Milton will answer questions such as “What does it mean to be an insurance agent?” “What authority are agents granted by the agency contract?” and “What duties do agents have? To the insurer? The insured?”
— Doug Fleming, LUTCF, will lead a discussion on the Fundamentals of Life Insurance and Annuities. Participants will learn the whys and wherefores of common life insurance policy provisions, explore basic permanent life insurance contracts, become familiar with various forms of term insurance and annuities and more.
— The Additional Insured Dilemma, led by Ted Kinney, CIC, CPCU, ARM, CPIA, AAI, AU, is designed to take the mystery out of adding additional insureds. Kinney will delve into the reasons for adding named insureds versus additional insureds; additional insureds versus contractual liability; scope of coverage; indemnity agreements and endorsements.
— During his E&O Prevention: Legal Trends and Developing Case Law session, David Page, Esq. will review changes in federal and state law on a national basis, focusing on particular examples in Connecticut. Attendees will receive suggestions for errors and omissions liability prevention and predictions of future trends.
