I still don’t understand how this “insurance” protects anyone other than the State. There is no liability coverage. If I’m hit by a driver with Dollar-A-Day, my injuries are not covered, my vehicle damage is not covered. I’ll have to go through my own policy’s uninsured/ under-insured motorist coverage. If Mr./Ms. Dollar-A-Day hits a light pole or fence or building, they have no coverage for the damage caused to others. It comes out of their own pocket. If I sue them for damage they cause, they have no defense cost payments and the cost of the damage is on them. The State makes out very well. These policies serve as a pool of “deductible” money to cover hospital costs previously paid from the first dollar by Medicaid. Auto insurance is supposed to prove financial responsibility in the event you cause damage to others. This Dollar-A-Day policy does not meet this need.

You hit the pool on the head Peg, I’m waiting to see the cost of UM/UIM increase to $150.00.

Sound like auto insurance pool is back.

But is there that much difference between someone that can’t afford auto insurance and has Medicaid and someone that doesn’t and why do they get the break.

You can go on and on and on but this doesn’t seem to be a well concieved idea from many perspectives.

HOW CAN WE, WITH A CONSCIENCE THINK OF PROMOTING THIS “POLICY” … IT IS ONLY A GET OUT OF JAIL CARD.
WHY ARE WE CHOOSING ONLY MEDICAID PEOPLE ? MOST OF THESE FOLKS CANNOT AFFORD CARS SO WE ARE BASICALLY ENCOURAGING FRAUD AND CHEATING. WE HAVE NOT HAD AN HONEST REQUEST FROM A LEGITIMATE PERSON YET AND THAT INCLUDED THE ONE AND ONLY POLICY WE DID WRITE. THIS IS A TERRIBLE APPROACH TO RESOLVING THE INSURANCE ISSUES IN THIS STATE.

This Insurance Plan does’nt looks right, if DaD driver damage someone’s property and if that person want to sue that driver, who is going to protect that DaD driver? Let’s say someone is sueing him or her for $25,000 for damaging his brand new car and if that DaD driver own his/her primary home let say $100,000 worth. A sueing person will attack his/her personal property, if he /she don’t pay someone’s damages. Situation not so good for the both the parties.

Secondly,If you are real poor or low-income person and own no any personal property than this DaD Insurance Policy is good for you. Medicaid people also own some sort of personal properties, they don’t have to be completely low-income persons and no saving people? They don’t have to own 10 years old car? They can own reasonable price new or similiar car too.

All Medicaid receipents are not on such poverty line, and don’t consider them as low life people. They are also hard working people, like you and me but the size of their family and the income what they makes, put them in this range, where they qualify for some medical and health benefits from Federal and State Government. There is nothing wrong in that.

McGreevey, insurance plan is good, but lot of loop holes are there and some other issues has to be addressed and sort out.

Ms. Vega: Don’t spend your money too quickly. In fact, you may want to put aside some of what you saved just in case you cause an accident. Your “insurance” won’t pay. It only covers for injuries to YOU. The most protected entity under this policy is the State of New Jersey and Medicaid. I’m all for a policy that is not financially crippling to those struggling to raise a family and give them a decent life. But this policy is not it.

What could possibly happen to the dollar a day insured motorist if the accident is his or her fault? What about the motorist who is fully insuranced,is it true the dollar a day insurance holder can lose his or her license?

Dollar A Day driver will be personally responsible for the damages they cause. They could be presented the bill for whatever injury or damage they cause. They could be personally taken to court. Of course, they also can hope that whatever damages they caused will be covered by the injured party’s own policy. I’m not sure what b4reason is aiming for with the second question. I don’t know the circumstances that dollar a day would lose their license. I would think that would only happen based on the accident itself and would have no relation to the type of insurance coverage.

    Good idea:
    1. After looking for work a year and a half with a car because insurance was too high and all of the job offers are only in reach with a car…this is wonderful..

    Bad idea:

    1. Once I start working..no medicaid therefore no insurance.
    2. only you are covered

    Solution:

Base insurance prices on driving records AND income for everyone in NJ.

See my post from April 8, 2004. This “insurance” doesn’t cover liability – not bodily injury to others, not property damage to others. It doesn’t cover physical damage – comprehensive if something (a deer?)hits your vehicle or collision if you collide with something (a guardrail?). It’s cheap and it will allow you to drive legally, but it’s not insurance – no matter WHAT they call it.

This type of policy is a bandaid approach to the problem. If you get hit by someone with this type of policy it will cost you $500.00 in deductable, and then you would have to sue the person in order to get reimbursed. So let\’s see I pay top dollar for insurance, I get rear-ended and suffer damage to my vehicle by someone with this type of insurance, and I have to pay $500.00 out of pocket to get it fixed? Does not seem fair to me. The state should have set up a fund to reimburse people the deductable they are forced to pay when they are not at fault.

Nancy: See my first post on 4/8/04. The State seems to have set this up for their own purpose, not the drivers of the state. Your scenario for property damage is concern enough. But how about if you were injured as well? You can sue the dollar-a-day driver but, remember, this is someone who has little money. Where will the payment come from even if you win the suit? So much for insurance proving financial responsibility.

The same this just happened to me about a month ago. This lady rear-ended me because apparently the stop sign didn\’t apply to her. When I got out to talk to her, she spoke perfect English. But when my obviously Hispanic boyfriend got out, she suddenly didn\’t speak a word of English! What she didn\’t know was that I understand Spanish. She was trying to say that it was her fault and she didn\’t cause the damage, that it was already there. My car was 2 months old! But why should she have cared, she doesn\’t have to pay for anything. These dollar a day people can go around hitting who ever and will never be held responsible. It isn\’t right.

Low income and low class are two different things, first of all. In order to be eligible you must have medicaid with hospitilization. I think it was set up that way because of the low coverage. Your medicaid will pay for whatever you can\’t. There are a lot of loopholes in it, but otherwise I would not be able to drive the car that was given to me by a friend. Many thanks to former governor McGreevy

(Sorry, I got tired of all the re:\’s)
You\’re right, the State should have come up with a more effective coverage, while remaining low cost. My take on it is that if you were hurt in a car accident, Medicaid would have paid for your injuries. Now that you have dollar-a-day, your auto injuries would be paid by the policy out of a new pool of money generated by all the dollar-a-day policies. The State saves money on Medicaid payments. How nice for the State. Other than having their own injuries taken care of, those two unfortunate drivers are on their own.
You sound like you have a good head on your shoulders. I\’m sure you\’ll be paying hideous insurance premiums on a new BMW before you know it. Good luck!

Peg, I understand exactly what you are saying. (My former comment about low income not equalling low class was directed toward Mindy.) That is a major concern, and I do belive that the state is doing it to make NJ look better statistically. I don\’t think it is right for the state to change the legal amount of insurance coverage for low income drivers, if that is basically what they are doing, as the laws are in place for a reason. However, for me, this is the only way that I can afford to get my son to day care so that my boyfriend and I can go to work, and hopefully work ourselves out of this situation. I cannot risk going to jail, or having my license suspended, but having a huge bill is just a risk I will have to take. The only thing that I can do is try my best to drive carefully, stay out of ice storms, and hope nothing like that happens, (at least until I can get a real insurance plan, and a car worth paying for it). Also, if anyone is still interested, NJCure is a lower cost insurance plan. I don\’t know the details, but I think anyone is eligible.

P.S. What happens if two dollar a day drivers collide with each other? they would both be out of luck, I guess?

I\’m glad you are concerned enough to not drive illegally. Of course low income does not equal low class – that has NEVER been the issue. The State has provided this coverage, so now you can drive your car legally. Now, what\’s the REAL reason for insurance? Let\’s say, the next ice storm we have, your car slides into a traffic light pole and knocks it down. You will be sent the bill for repairing the light pole. Do you have the money for it? Your \”insurance\” does not cover this accident. What if the falling pole hit a car stopped at the red light? If the passenger was severely injured, who pays? Your \”insurance\” does not cover it. Everyone and anyone else pays – except the person who caused (however unintentionally) the accident – YOU. If the State is going to provide low premium insurance at least let it truly BE insurance.

The driver has to be on Medicaid with hospitalization to be eligible for Dollar A Day. NJ has a Basic auto insurance policy. Still doesn\’t offer much in coverage, but should be less expensive than the standard policy. Go to http://WWW.NJDOBI.org (the NJ Dept of Banking & Insurance website). Click under \”Consumers\” and check out the information on the Basic policy. You should be able to get this coverage from an independent agent or contact the DOBI for help.

A short time ago my son was diagnosed with cancer. I was driving a beat up old car and my son’s father and I decide to trade that in for a new car. Well his credit was better than mine so he financed a car for me so I could take our son to Children’s Hospital for treatments. Well my son’s father turn crazy and we spilt up and he took his car. I no longer have a car and with all that is going on I need a vehicle but can not afford auto insurance. I called Medicaid and they said I am not eligible for this program. I don’t understand why I am a single parent raising a child with special needs. I talked to so many people from the county trying to find out how to get on this program immediately but no one seems to know anything. Someone with a brain Please help….Please e-mail me. Please!

My son got hit by one of these drivers; she ran the stop sign out in front of him on a 2 lane highway; on a rainy day. He tried to stop; but had no where to go but into her. Her car had a dent in the bumper and his front end was totalled. She walks away free and clear and he’s got a totalled car. Of course he’s only 18 and can’t afford collision on his car due to the high rates. She still has a vehicle to drive and were in battle to try and get his car fixed by ???? He doesn’t have the money to fix it or buy another one. How fair is this NJ !!

I would suggest contacting the NJ Dept of Banking & Insurance (www.state.nj.us/dobi) and register a complaint. Make your displeasure known and let them know the real life consequences of this “coverage”. More immediate, I would suggest contacting your own insurance carrier. You most likely have uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage and can file a claim under your own policy since the person that hit your son did not have adequate insurance. Good luck!

It’s NOT insurance. Se my entry April 4, 2004. It doesn’t cover the person or vehicle who is hit. It doesn’t cover the vehicle of the policy holder. The policy holder has Medicaid, so any injuries of theirs would be covered in any case. All this “coverage” does is create a pool of premium to act as a deductible for Medicaid when a policy holder is injured in an auto accident. OH – and it allows the policyholder to drive legally in New Jersey, even though they don’t meet mandatory (for the rest of us) financial responsibility laws. Don’t rain on the insurance companies for this one. It’s the State of New Jersey that set this one up. As far as your vehicle is concerned, you can try your own uninsured/ under-insured motorist coverage. Good luck!

there should be away to do the applicatuon on line. Also this is good thing for consumers who can’t afford the high price auto insurance, however there should be at least liaility coverage in the event of a motor vehilce accident the insurance does not cover any type of damages which is not a good thing because if the insured cannot afford liability coverage how do you expect them to pay for damages in the event of a motor vehicle accident.

I was in bumber to bumber traffic on a New York Highway and was hit in the back, the person driving was not the insured of this vehicle. The driver of the vehicle said they would pay for the damages, when I got an estimate they could not afford to pay. I had to go through my inusurance pay a deductable to get my car fixed and the other party has no insurance to pay for the damages they are liable for. How is this fair? The person that has the dollar day insurance was not driving the car and the car is driven in another state how is that fair?
