This is a classic reason insurers and agents should not support mandatory UM reporting laws. I have seen this backlash all over the western states every time tougher DMV reporting are put in place. You can count on them to screw it up…and who do the public AND DMV blame? Insurers.

but if they do nothing then the uninsured motorist rate will either stay the same, or go up.

SOMETHING needs to be done, and this is just the first step. I’m sure it will get better in the future, once all the quirks have been ironed out.

After living in poverty for many years, in Maine and elsewhere, I have found myself on several occasions making the choice to feed my family, buy fuel oil, keep the lights on, or pay the insurance.

Perhaps the best way to make sure all drivers are insured is make sure it is affordable for all. If the government mandates laws like these without taking into consideration all the working poor it is nothing less than discrimination.
