The owner of a Bloomfield trucking company involved in a fatal 20-vehicle crash this summer in Avon has been ordered to appear in court and bring with him financial records for the past year.
The order on Friday came two days after a Superior Court Judge Vanessa L. Bryant froze the assets of American Crushing & Recycling. She ordered owner David Wilcox to appear in Hartford Superior Court Tuesday morning.
A 2000 Mack dump truck owned by the company barreled out of control down Avon Mountain on Route 44 and smashed into 19 other vehicles including a commuter bus waiting at a traffic signal at the bottom of the hill. Four people, including the driver of the truck, were killed in the July 29 accident. Four others were seriously injured.
Police believe mechanical failure and possibly driver error caused the crash, which remains under investigation. The truck had a history of safety violations.
State Attorney General Richard Blumenthal said he and an attorney for a crash victim’s family sought the order to freeze the assets after learning that the company planned to auction off some of its trucks.
Blumenthal said wanted Wilcox called into court after learning the owner was moving some of the company’s assets.
“Adding insult to horrific tragedy, this company has now deliberately disregarded a court order freezing its assets,” Blumenthal said.
Company officials have not responded to requests for comment.
