When the body of Edward Schiller was found slumped behind the wheel of his Nissan Maxima in a parking garage in Newton, Mass. early on the morning of Jan. 13, authorities said they believed the 39-year-old insurance agent was a deliberate target.
“It certainly does not appear random, and it is a shooting to the head at close range,” Middlesex District Attorney Martha Coakley said at the time. “It’s possible that someone followed him in or was waiting for him.”
Two men were arrested Tuesday night in the case, Coakley’s office announced before their arraignments Wednesday morning at Newton District Court.
A spokeswoman for Coakley identified the men arrested as James Brescia, of Waltham and Scott Foxworth, of Dracut.
Schiller was found in the garage next to his office building across Route 9 from the Atrium Mall in Chestnut Hill. He had been expected at his job at Aronson Insurance at 8 a.m.
When his body was found shortly after 9:30 a.m., there was no damage to the car, Coakley said then, “so we believe the car door was opened, either by Mr. Schiller or by his assassin.”
Coakley said people in the neighborhood told police they heard noises that may have been gunshots at 7:30 a.m.
The killing shocked some in Newton, a mostly affluent suburb of 80,000 people located just west of Boston. It had recently been named the safest city in America for the second straight year by Morgan Quitno Press, which publishes the annual “City Crime Rankings.”
