Wake up and smell the coffee dude? Does he not realize how many out there do not even have and have never had and have no intention of getting a DL but they still drive? Lienholders are increasingly not allowing excluded drivers on policies for that reason, because they still drive and there is no coverage if they wreck the car. Everyone getting excited all of a sudden including the imigration bill (which is part of this problem) are a little latle and are putting the horse behind the cart. Better late than never though so I hope he will get something started that the consumer groups will not be able to stop.

Not only do they drive without a license but insurance is not mandatory in NH so lots of folks drive without it. Unfortunately, if you are the victim of the uninsured the State of NH no longer suspends their license (if there is one) until restitution is worked out. Once upon a time they did that but NH folks leave NH without insurance all the time. Watch out for any older car with a NH plate or temp plate…remember Live Free or Die… the NH way

Insurance NOT mandatory in NH???? That in and of itself is an outrage!!!! As someone whose life was pretty much ruined by an uninsured driver 15 years ago, I cannot stress strongly enough that there must be stiffer penalties for driving without insurance or a drivers license. I say put them in jail!! I say that if its a welfare-collecting immigrant, takle THEIR benefits away and give it to the law-abiding citizen who they might have left disabled from an accident that that they caused in which they were unlicensed and uninsured!! Screw their civil rights!

I used to make a middle-class wage as a union plasterer (the ONLY woman in the local!). I was not yet 24 yrs old and just getting a leg up as I was only in my good paying construction job for a year and a half when an uninsured driver (with no assets to sue for) ran a red light and hit me while I was in my car on my way to work. I was left w/ a broken back and two smashed knees, unable to walk without braces for 3 years. I went from being able to earn a living to support myself to earning zip – in the blink of an eye! And as for \”all this help out there for poor people, disabled people, etc\”, that\’s a crock – don\’t believe it! I had NO income and was living in extreme poverty for the next decade as a result while I struggled to cope w/ the disability, struggled as someone in poverty with no resources and NO help to get a college education to re-enter the workforce (which I finally graduated in May, 2001 at age 35), incurring $54K in student loans to do it. Then after graduating as a near-middle-aged woman w/ a disability, I found nobody would hire me or give me a chance for a job because I was no longer a pretty, thin young 23 yr old Barbie Doll and I had been out of the workforce for 10 years because of being disabled, poor and trying to get help while trying to get the education that was supposed to re-open doors of opportunity for me but that didn\’t happen because most of the IT and math jobs were being off-shored. Employers that did hire Americans were only hiring those under age 25 so once again, I was left high and dry with nothing.

The woman driving without insurance who hit me – what did SHE suffer? Not a damn thing! I suffered without access to medical and dental care for that whole time, too and believe me, 15 years is a long time to have to suffer and do without. There wasn\’t \”all this help\” when I really needed it.

Now I am struggling to make a living as an independent, small start-up P & C agent and I am making it. I stress (actually preach) the need for UM/UIM to ALL my insurance customers. As of this year, this is the first time in 15 years I have been able to afford health & dental insurance for myself. But anything I may have now that I managed to get scraping and struggling after going through so much does NOT bring back the teeth I lost for the YEARS I was unable to make a living to afford dental care or to support myself w/ just the basic needs, and the YEARS I had no health care. All because some nitwit uninsured driver felt that her right to break the law and drive anyway superceded MY right to not be sentenced to poverty due to ending up disabled and so poor without income, support or access to medical care that my living conditions were like those in a 3rd world country because of not being able to get any of this so-called help that everybody says is out there. I am not asking for sympathy here, but I am SO strongly convicted in my opinions about uninsured/unlicensed drivers because of what happened to me that I don\’t want anyone else to EVER have to suffer what I went through – NOT EVER!

I can hear your pain Jacqueline, but where was your UM/UIM? I strongly sugget an Umbrella including UM/UIM for the very reasons you stated. Good luck in the insurance business, but honestly you can offer the coverage to the client, they do not have to buy it here… but legally the uninsured in NH cannot leave the State. I have seen more uninsured driver/accidents in Mass where insurance is mandatory. I don\’t think there is any way to enforce insurance whether mandatory or not.
