I may be betraying my beliefs, but I think this is a good plan. It appears to give people a fiscal reward for living healthy, and it should lead to fewer claims and health issues in the long run. It appears that we all win.

By all means, if we can go ahead and test fetuses in the womb, lets take those with a predisposition to excess weight and expose them to the wolves on the hillsides. After all, anyone with a 5% plus body fat is a slacker and should be punished. Then we can move on to people who might smoke (oops, already done), who might take high risk jobs or may be the wrong color. Its their fault. I am a conservative in all ways and find this constantly increasing intrusion into our personal lives by employers appalling.

I REFUSE to be made a pariah by insurers, airlines and society just because I\’ve got junk in my trunk.

Auntie may have been kidding, but her joke doesn\’t seem too far from reality.

A word of advice to everyone, for all intents and purposes, you better strive for PERFECTION on every imaginable level, lest an insurer or some other entity determines you to be flawed and therefore unworthy of the same treatments and rights as your ideal counterparts.

There is a difference between being predisposed to being heavy and being \”morbidly obese\” as the article mentions or consciously making decisions that are grossly detrimental to your health (i.e. smoking). If you have the benefit of recieving subsidized health care, then you ought to take an active role in keeping those costs down. Furthermore, the plan requires \”morbidly obese\” people to enter weight management programs, but does not deny them coverage. This is not quite the heinous crime we make it out to be! Not only are they enabling themselves to offer cheaper care to more people by keeping costs down, they are also helping people to improve the quality of their lives. This does not in any way say that obese people are \”pariahs,\” but is instead a tool to ensure the continued availability of this program.

I have to agree with Auntie Everbody, what\’s the next part of MY LIFE that they are going take from me.

You can\’t watch sporting events because it drives your blood pressure up. BAN ALL SPORTS!

Come on now, the \”Nany Society\” is getting out of hand. There is a thing called Personal Responsibility, we should all take a little…

Very true, Bulldogg, but everybody else shouldn\’t have to pay for it in the form of higher premiums.

Then don\’t mandate people to have health insurance and let those who want to be overweight, be overweight.

You are taking away MY FREEDOM to choose by telling me \”I have to have this and live like this…\”

Again, its about Personal Responsibility vs Government intrusion…

This is the opitome of capitalism folks. These are privately owned businesses and if they want to charge you more for their product because they don\’t like the color of your hair then they should!! If you live in RI and want cheaper health insurance, then lose weight and quit smoking.

I don\’t hear anyone saying we should allow alcoholics with DUI\’s to have the same auto rates as those who exhibit more responsible behavior.

The difference between my fat butt and an alcoholic behind the wheel is that the alcoholic is FAR more likely to kill someone than my big *** is.

I am personally responsible for the fact that I\’m big. Having taken a long look at the family tree, it was obvious to me in my teens that if I didn\’t adhere to a very strict diet, I would be a large person just as the majority of my relatives are. After many failed diet attempts, I admitted defeat. I have zero, I mean ZERO will power. So shoot me, I like food.

But how come I\’m not at the doc\’s office every 2 weeks? How come I don\’t have health problems? Why is my blood pressure normal? Why don\’t I have high cholesterol? Could it be that I do actually eat well (albeit too much) and I get regular exercise? Could it be that there are other large people just like me who are big AND healthy? I know I\’m not the only one.

Capitolism dictates that privately owned businesses should be allowed to discriminate based on appearance? Really? I wonder what Rosa Parks would have to say about that.

This is not a discrimination based on APPEARANCE, this is a discrimination based on RISK! If you happen to be overweight but healthy, that\’s fine, but the average overweight person presents more risk and therefore should be priced for. It\’s how insurance works!!!!

My reading of the article (particularly the first paragraph)left me with the impression that it was a voluntary plan. If you want cheaper insurance, you enroll in this plan and then agree to meet certain requirements. It\’s no more mandatory than a high deductible, lower limits, or flat out refusing coverage. It\’s risk reduction, the same as building an earthquake resistant house or driving a safer car is.

How is voluntarily enrolling in a plan with pre-set requirements in order to get cheaper rates the second coming of \”1984\”?

I did not call myself a conservative but thanks for noticing.

Wiretapping Innocent Civilians??? Ok, I see you for who you really are. I guess Osma Bin Laden is a HERO in your eyes? Warrentless Wiretaping is only on international calls to suspects/known sympathizers of your hero and his organization. Are you that STUPID to think that Bush is listening to you call up your Shrink and complain how depressed you are? If you beleive that, I own a bridge in Brooklyn that I can sell to you cheap….

As to address your second paragraph, HELL YES I AM PROUD OF THE ADMINISTRATION. Let me ask you one simple question (one that even you should not have a problem comprehending). How many terrorist attacks have we had since 9/11 IN THIS COUNTRY?

You fool, bulldogg you took the bait! Let me ask you this, these terrorists who are proven to have an incredible amount of money, and who are organized, have not struck once???

You really think thats casue Bush stopped them? They got a law where we all need passports now, well, the terrorists had passports om 911!!!

You really think one Muslam couldnt get through the Southern border with the thousands of Mexicans who pass through untouched each day?? Are you this naive??

All a muslam terrost has to do is slip through with a bomb, sit in line outside at Wal-Mart on the Friday after Thanks Giving and blow him self up. And what about the supposed Sleeper Cells!! What is their point of existence? Just to sit around and chill out?

If these terorosts really wanted to detonate a bomb in a Walmart it would be EASY AS HELL. THEY HAVE CHOSEN NOT TO DO ANYTHING!!!

YOU DAM IDIOT, YOU THINK GEORGE BUSH STOPPED THEM??

Yea that War in Iraq is going real well. The last round of voting proves you are on your own you FOOL!!!

I love stupid people, and so does Carl Rove, they make the world go round, they are so easy to manipulate.

    HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

    Valid, chill baby.

Mary Proctor suggested businesses could discriminate based on hair color. I was responding to her comment about that. Hair color is an aspect of appearance.

The ignorance of the left is astounding.

They\’ve not struck once. You are right, they hit 3 targets (both towers and the pentagon). But we still consider it one incident. REMEMBER 9/11 and where did the money come from for that, oh yeah, Osma. But in your eyes, he\’s the good guy, Bush is the evil one.

Let me ask you another question, what did Bill Clinton do to stop the terrorists. As I recall there were several terrorist attacks on US interest, including one in the US and he did NOTHING!!!

We can\’t close the southern boarder, just listen to the rants from such learned leftists like Moveon.org and John Kerry, who want to grant amnesty to illegals crossing the boarder everyday.

Let\’s head to Iraq now, your heros are killing women and children in cowardly attacks. It sounds exactly like the dictator on trial over there. How many people have they uncoverd in mass graves from your other hero, Sadam? What about the rape rooms and killing chambers, I\’m sure that you are proud that Al Queda has kept the practice alive…

So who has done more to protect us, the Left lead by Clinton or Bush? No attacks on US soil since 9/11, I\’ll help you out, Bush.

MOST politicians are clowns, liars, cheats and crooks, regardless of their party affiliation.

What\’s wrong with drunks and gays? Some of the most fun people I know are drunks and gays. Some of the creepiest people I know are politicians. Just because politicians make terrible drunks and gays doesn\’t mean all drunks and gays are terrible people.

The urine drinking thing… some one explain that to me because I don\’t get it. Was there a pee-drinking scandal in the news and I (thankfully) missed it?

I am open water rescue certified. I rarely get sick. But due to a problem w/ my metabolism, I am overweight. It is no joy being a fat middle-aged lady and not being able to look good in nice clothes. To hear many of you who have never had a weight problem and who are fortunate enough to be thin, one would think that all of us \”fatties\” are fat because we simply don\’t put the fork down. Well surprise, surprise!! I eat less than 1500 cal/day, and NONE of it junk food! I swim and walk alot, yet I have not been able to drop back to the size 12 that I was when I was 25. Sometimes things just happen that you just can\’t help and have very little control over. As a fat woman, I am surcharged 300% on my insurance premiums so all you thin, perfect and lucky people out there can just shut your yaps about us \”fatsos\” driving up YOUR health insurance premiums. WE are the ones paying for it – even if it is something beyond our control.

And the way we heavy people are judged and looked down on and last ever tobe picked for a date, it\’s not like any of us who are fat haven\’t tried everything humanly possible so we could be thin and attractive, too. Being thin and attractive means an easier time getting a job, more potential people to date, more social acceptance. Did ANY of you ever stop to think we wouldn\’t love to have it like that, to be one of the accepted, the desirable, the worthy of romance and love, the worthy of hire, and finally the deserving of affordable health insurance? WE suffer financially – NOT you because WE are the ones paying 300% more for our healthcare coverage – IF we can even get it to begin with!

Beautiful comes in ALL shapes and sizes. Please don\’t be down on your looks or yourself because you\’re big.

To hell with narrow minds who think \’attractive\’ only happens at size 8 or smaller.

Other women and men have situations like yours and they learn to accept and appreciate themselves. NAAFA.org is a good place to start.

Continued good health to you and best of luck on your journey toward self acceptance.
