Having handled numerous construction site accidents I can tell you there’s usually more to the story that the media prints. Many falls are attributable to worker carelessness by failing to follow proper procedure, or failing to use safety devices like lanyards. (safety belt and lifeline attached to the building). The latest in NYC involved two guys who were literally blown off the building. Had they been wearing the lanyanrd it wouldn’t have resulted in serious injury or death. Construction work has always been, and will always be dangerous regardless of how many precautions are taken.

So they should have more safety managers to make them wear their lanyards…..

Ever hear the term “recalcitrant employee”? It’s used in the WC litigation field to describe those who refuse to utilize safety devices because they believe them to be “cumbersome”. More safety managers aren’t going to change the attitudes of those types of people. In addition, why force them? It’s no different than deciding not to use a seatbelt in a car. You know it can save your life, but it’s your choice. If you don’t use the lanyard or the seat belt, and don’t care enough about your personal safety, why should anyone else? Some seed fell on rock.

There is very good reason to force them, in a crowded city their falling body can do a lot of damage to other people and property. Take a 200 lb sack and drop it from 20 stories and see what happens on the sidewalk below.
