I was stranded on a stalled escalator for several hours until someone came and got it going again. I’m gonna sue somebody….

How could you be stranded on a stalled escalator? couldn’t you just walk down the stairs if it stopped?

I figured maybe the escalator didn’t work at all and all the fatties had to actually walk up and down stairs.

I’m so glad you were able to get beyond the trauma enough to realize somebody is at fault and should pay.

I’m sorry all that happened, but how does a broken leg and “soft tissue” injuries seriously change his future earnings? Legs heal, tissue unbruises. Let your health insurance subrogate, ask them for your lost time from work, and move on.

To Mark – being in claims myself, I can appreciate your skepticism. Obviously I can’t disclose much detail in this public forum, but I can tell you that the injuries were such that this producer (he’s in his mid 50’s) will have difficulty walking for years to come, if not for the rest of his life. It will hamper his ability to meet with clients. It also ends his hobby as a karate instructor.
I don’t like frivolous lawsuits. But none of these damages will be something recovered through subrogation by his health insurer. So I support his decision to join in the lawsuit. It’s just very frustrating that the media can be bought to dismiss reporting this incident as nothing but a minor “escalator malfunction”, when there were some terrible injuries involved (2 other less fortunate people were placed on life support).

The media has been downplaying the incident. While I personally loathe the litigiousness of our society, this “escalator malfunction” was much more than that, was definitely the result of negligence, and caused some terrible injuries. One of our producers & his wife were two of those injured. The escalator is an exit from the top of the stadium straight down to ground level. I’d say it’s about 4 to 5 stories high or more. The metal conveyor stairs / belt broke underneath hundreds of people exiting the stadium via the escalator after a game, and many people fell & slid down the ramp. Some fell off the side. Our producer slid all the way to the bottom, and was able to throw his wife over the side just before hitting the bottom, where the metal conveyor stairs were piling up, along with people. His leg got caught in the metal stairs, fracturing it in several places. He also suffered numerous other soft tissue injuries. His wife sustained several fractured ribs. He was in traction & his leg was pinned, and he remains out of work to this day. He will never be the same, and it’s had serious impact on his earnings (as well as the agency’s) and his future earning capacity.
This isn’t the first time something like this has happened at Giants Stadium, but the Stadium has always managed to manipulate the media somehow to avoid bad publicity. I guess free Giants tickets can buy you good press.

    Wow, that sounds terrible.

That being said…I never did like escalators; like carnies, they’re just creepy. I’m always afraid those claw-like tips will catch a pant leg or a shoe lace and peel your leg like an apple while trying to suck you down to the escalator gobblins.

I say do away with all of them and install stairs. The exercise would be just the ticket for the fattest general population in the world.
