Democrat Vying for Delaware Insurance Post Defends Funds

April 16, 2008

A Democrat running for insurance commissioner says contributions listed in his campaign finance report from a state contractor aren’t unethical.

INS Regulatory Services Inc. — which has received $60 million from the state insurance department to perform financial examinations — donated thousands of dollars to Gene Reed. In all, individuals connected with the company paid more than $14,000 to Reed’s campaign.

Reed is the manager of consumer protection enforcement for the state insurance department. He says his donors know that he fights for consumers now and will fight for them if he’s elected.

He’s running against Democrats Karen Weldin Stewart and Tom Savage and Republican John Brady.
