I generally don’t like the government interfering with business too much and this bill rubs me wrong on a basic level. But I do see where it is desirable to have such a ban in effect.
People decide what to do with their lives and must learn to deal with the consequences. If one of the consequences of volunteering for the fire department is increased insurance rates, that’s something that must be weighed in the decision to volunteer.
On the other hand it should encourage more volunteers if people knew they would not have to pay increased insurance rates simply for helping their community.
I guess I’m just enough of a socialist that I can support the “greater good” argument on this one. At least until I’ve mulled it over some more.
