…no day dreaming while driving, no eating, no talking to passengers, no shouting out the window, no turning your head to look at attractive women (or men), no sneezing, no driving under emotional distress or when tired…

Another useless NYS feel good law. Why must legislation take the place of good old common sense? Big Daddy is watching…

Scott……you are precisely the kind of person that makes it necessary to pass laws like this. There is no legitimate reason to have to eat while driving. If you’re that easily distracted by men or women walking you can’t possibly be paying attention to what’s happening in front of you. It only takes a second for somebody to slam on the brakes, or for a kid to dart out into traffic. Think about these things while you’re whining about having to pay attention to your primary job……..driving the damn car. You’re probably from a generation that only worries about self-gratification.

The latest generation of new drivers has grown up with cell phones. That was not always the case. Some of us were afforded the luxury of years of driving experience before this latest “distraction” became available. There have to be boundaries set when getting behind the wheel, even more so for newer drivers. Accidents are going to happen; everyone will agree that is inevitable. However, I see no reason why our laws should not keep up with our advances in technology.

For the record I am in my 20’s and was in college when cell phone’s hit the mainstream.

Eli…I don’t even own a cell phone. Your personal attacks are groundless. I’m sure we’re all impressed by your total commitment to driving safety but I suspect that even such an undistracted and conscientious driver as yourself has on occasion eaten a burger, put on makeup or checked your face in the mirror while driving. My point is these distractions don’t need to be criminalized. Surely we can find a way to address the texting problem without infringing on individual freedoms.

    Eli,

I thought the government was supposed to make sure we don’t have monopolies, fix and build roads, collect taxes, manage school systems etc.

Guess there’s so few problems to deal with they have time to pass babysitter nanny-state laws like “no texting while driving.” Maybe they should draft a law to make it illegal to read books while driving, of course with an exception for the Bible.

It’s something called common sense – we don’t need to legislate every common sense item encountered in daily life. It’s the government treating us like we are five years old and like we need protection from ourselves since we just don’t know any better.

I’m as lazier-fair as anyone, but I swear cell phones are like crack to some people… they simply cannot put them down. Unfortunately, the only way to stop this behavior – while driving – is heavy fines along with higher insurance premiums.

Texting while driving is insanely stupid… anyone arguing otherwise should not be driving.

But see Matt – Eli is exactly why we have these stupid nanny gov’t laws – because some people (like Eli) don’t use common sense. They need to have their hands held and ususally have somoene whip their @ss for them.

I have a better idea – how about NO children in the car!! Have you ever watched that Mom beside you driving 70 mph to get to soccer practice with her head turned backward to see what her child or children are doing in the backseat? That’s much worse than a cell phone! You can ignore the phone or toss it aside if you need to – can’t do that with kids.

putting on make-up, eating, fighting over raido stations, reading a book or newspaper, kissing, sex, etc.. at what point do you stop and let common sense take over? Next: laws on walking on the sidewalk, don’t step on cracks, no weaving stay to the right side for coming and left for going, control your umbrella…

JP: These stupid and draconian laws are made because some people are stupid, ingornant, and have no COMMON SENSE. I agree we shouldn’t need this type of legislation. Unfortunately, some elements of society weren’t raised properly and think playing grand theft auto and playing with electronic toys to send mundane messages to their friends while behind the wheel of a car is their right.

How can you possibly enforce this? You cant prove that someone was texting.

Also, you people talk about the govt staying out of our lives and how you have liberals and democrats so you vote republicans…..

But this bill is being pushed by REPUBLICANS

I agree that another law is useless. There is already a law called reckless driving which I think all the examples listed from texting to sex (well maybe not sex) apply. The problem is you can’t rergulate stupidity or enforce common sense.
