Pennsylvania Ex-Judge in Federal Prison for Insurance Fraud

May 1, 2009

An ex-judge for the Pennsylvania Superior Court has begun serving his 46-month sentence for insurance fraud at a minimum-security federal prison in West Virginia.

Online federal prison record confirm that former judge Michael Joyce has reported to the facility in Morgantown, W.Va.

The 60-year-old Joyce was convicted in November of mail fraud and money laundering for allegedly exaggerating neck and back injuries to collect $440,000 in insurance claims stemming from a fender bender in August 2001.

Federal prosecutors are seeking to forfeit Joyce’s home because they say he used the money to pay for it. But Joyce’s wife is challenging that saying her name has been on the deed since 2005 and that marital assets were used to pay the mortgage and improve the home.
