Former Connecticut Insurance Commissioner Susan Cogswell, the first woman to hold the job, has died. She was 57.
The Republican Town Committee of Torrington, where Cogswell lived, released a statement saying Cogswell died Tuesday morning surrounded by her family. She was a former chairwoman of the committee.
The cause of her death wasn’t announced. She had been hospitalized in 2006 for a noncancerous tumor above an ear. No one answered the phone at Cogswell’s home Wednesday.
Cogswell was appointed insurance commissioner in 2000 by then-Gov. John G. Rowland and served until 2006. She had held management positions in the insurance and banking industries before moving to the Insurance Department.
Funeral arrangements haven’t been announced.
