Officials Say Tornado Hit Maryland County

October 5, 2010

The National Weather Service has confirmed that a tornado hit a neighborhood in Anne Arundel County in Maryland.

The weather service says the tornado with winds up to 80 mph touched down in Milburn during heavy storms on Thursday. Forecasters say they inspected damage, spoke with residents and sifted through data in concluding that a tornado had come through.

Forecasters say the tornado knocked over a sailboat, uprooted trees and pulled shingles off homes in its path. The winds also blew a piece of pool furniture into a stone wall and forced a tree to crush a work shed.

In addition, the tornado passed within a half mile of three schools, causing moderate damage.

Anne Arundel County Executive John R. Leopold says the storm did not cause any serious injuries or deaths.
