Wow….It’s about time! They need to implement that here in California, too! Too many soccer mom chatterboxes talking on their phones trying to navigate the Navigator! LOL!
Still won’t be a deterrent. As much as I hate to say it, this is nothing more that a feel good regulation. There has to be severe consequences for distracted driving before people will stop the behavior.
Well, Hank, I agree. I do have to say it’s a start….I think a $1,000 fine would be in order, too. The fine here in California is ridiculous…plus, no points. You can get a $1000 fine for parking in a handicap space, but heaven forbid if you are caught talking on the phone without a hands-free device while driving. The fine is $20.00 for the first offense and $50. for each additional offense. Now tell me, what is wrong with this picture? What does it take to pull your car over and make your call? My goodness…what did we do BEFORE cell phones?
Thanks for letting me vent, Hank, but this is one of my pet peeves!
This is great. I am glad that the points will be assigned! Now all we need is for the police to actually pull over people on their cell phones! I commute and everyday I see people talking and texting on thier cell phones! Enough already!!!
With so many companies doing more with less today, some of us have to use our cell phones while we are on the road, and as for so called hands free devices, are they really hands free? you still have to dial a number or push a button to answer a call.
with the jobless rate being what it is today, we can’t afford to get fired because we ignored an important call.
There should be a stipulation for those of us who have been doing this since way before any revenue generating laws were put into place.
Lets face it, it’s all about the money and how much of it we can feed our government.
“ON THE ROAD”…pull over to use the phone….it’s THAT easy!
I don’t want to have to worry about your inattention behind the wheel if one of my family members is crossing your path and heaven forbid you don’t see them…….
If you are that darned important, hire a driver to chauffer you around so that you can conduct business while enroute. That would also stimulate employment in addition helping to alleviate the distracted driver phenomena.
Mikey,
I totally agree with you…there should be a law for ALL of it, but in all practicality, carrying on a long-winded conversation on a cell phone is very distracting, to say the least.
Insurance points and Motor Vehicle points do not necessarily have the same point value in the state of NY.

If an accident, injury and/or death for you, your passengers or others on the road is not enough deterrent, then what are points going to do?
Points don’t seem to help increase seatbelt use either.

Do any of you who claim to “pull over” also eat, drink, change the CD, mess with mp3, talk with passengers, look at navigation systems, etc….
Don’t be hippocrites. All of this is distracting. Why attack cell phone users?

Take all the rights in the name of safety. Soon no drinking water or eating . Just give all the rights
