Former New York Lawmaker Faces Prison for Insurance Fraud

A former Long Island lawmaker faces up to 15 years in prison when he is sentenced today in a Hamptons fraud case.

George Guldi was convicted last month of grand larceny and insurance fraud involving the reconstruction of his Westhampton Beach home.

Prosecutors say Guldi stole $853,000 paid by his insurance carrier to be held in escrow to reconstruct his home which had been destroyed by fire in 2008. During the trial, Guldi said he did not know how the check ended up in his bank account.

A jury in Suffolk County Court in Riverhead acquitted Guldi of a forgery charge in the five-week trial. Guldi represented Westhampton Beach in the Suffolk County legislature from 1995 to 2003.

Guldi still faces another trial in a separate mortgage fraud case.
