The Pennsylvania Department of Labor & Industry announced relief measures for State Workers’ Insurance Fund (SWIF) policyholders affected by flooding caused by Tropical Storm Lee.
“Helping employers rebuild is an important part of the state’s economic recovery,” Department Secretary Julia Hearthway said. “These measures will improve processes and relieve some pressure on SWIF policyholders, giving them the chance to focus on the hard work of getting back to business.”
To help policyholders recovering from the effects of Tropical Storm Lee and related flooding, SWIF will:
• Work closely with policyholders forced to close their businesses due to the disaster by reviewing policies to provide penalty-free cancellations and waiving short-rate cancellation factors where appropriate.
• Provide immediate payroll reductions or adjustments, where appropriate, to afford policyholders affected by the disaster, but still in business, with the opportunity to experience some premium relief.
• Streamline its application process to assist any new start-up businesses that qualify and may be quickly put together to engage in clean-up or rebuilding endeavors.
Created by law in 1915, the State Workers’ Insurance Fund provides an assured source of workers’ compensation insurance for Pennsylvania businesses and their employees.
