The city of Pittsburgh has settled a lawsuit filed by two men who said they were wrongly swept up in arrests during the Group of 20 economic summit two years ago.
Solicitor Dan Regan said on Monday, Oct. 24, that the western Pennsylvania city’s insurer will pay $60,000 to settle the suit by Army Second Lt. Ryan Kingston of Monroeville and Nathan Poloni of Harrisburg.
The former University of Pittsburgh students said they were not protesting but were subjected to brutal treatment and unwarranted arrest in what their attorney called “de facto martial law'” during the September 2009 gathering.
Regan said the city does not acknowledge any wrongdoing. The plaintiffs and their attorneys will decide how to divide the amount. Several other suits stemming from the summit remain, including one involving 25 plaintiffs.
