Northeast Power Outages Hit Many Businesses Hard

Business owners and experts say the lengthy power outages caused by the freak October snowstorm have taken a toll on many companies and the losses are only beginning to be tallied.

Angela Campetti runs a small house-cleaning business in Simsbury, Conn., where nearly half the town’s 10,100 electricity customers still didn’t have power on Monday, Nov. 7, eight days after the storm ended. She says she’s lost a lot of money because her clients’ homes don’t have power or water.

Nine cities and towns in Connecticut had to move their polling places for Tuesday’s municipal elections, because some didn’t have power and others were being used as shelters and warming centers.

Insurance agents report higher volumes of businesses interruption claims than what was submitted during hurricanes Irene and Lee.
