This is out of control. Why should the family be entitled to everything this gentlemen would have made in his entire work career? First, how can anyone be certain any professional in this world will have a lifetime career and continue to earn increases year upon year? So many of us lost our earning potentials when after thirteen years with an employer we were downsized and had to take jobs at 40% less. This assumes the parents will out live their son and that he would have gave every earned dollar to them, for their benefit alone. No bills to pay, no expenses. It is important to make people whole, as whole as a dollar amount can make you when you’ve lost a loved one, but this award is out of control.

I guess you would have had to be on the jury to hear the arguments on both sides. This jury heard the arguments and made their decision. I don’t know. But just think how much money he would have had in his 401K and Roth IRA if he put the max in every year for 40 years plus employer contributions. The amount in his accounts would be worth millions after 40 years and that money would not have been spent on bills or anything during his working lifetime and would have been passed to his heirs upon his death.
