The Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania said this week it has established a new Wharton/Penn Risk and Insurance Program (WPRIP). The program’s goal is to promote and disseminate cutting-edge research on risk and insurance at the University of Pennsylvania.
Drawing on the University of Pennsylvania’s faculty, students, and partners, the program will promote interdisciplinary examinations of theoretical, empirical, domestic, and global topics in the risk management and insurance arena.
Topics of interest include corporate, household, and government risk management; property/casualty risk and insurance; health and longevity risk management; pensions, life, and health insurance; the management and financing of extreme events; and legal/regulatory aspects of risk and insurance.
“In recent years the world has faced financial, meteorological, and health related crises of historic proportions, underscoring the need for a deeper insurance and risk management knowledge base,” said Scott Harrington, the program’s academic director and Wharton professor of health care management and insurance and risk management. “Our goal is to provide new insights that will prove valuable to policy makers, consumers, and insurance and risk management professionals alike.”
The Wharton School has established the program in conjunction with the University of Pennsylvania’s law school and the university’s Leonard Davis Institute of Health Economics.
Using an interdisciplinary approach, the program plans to work together with various centers at the university, including the Pension Research Council/Boettner Center; the Risk Management and Decision Process Center; and the Leonard Davis Institute. The program’s activities will include a working paper series, workshops and conferences, funded research, and periodic research briefs and white papers.
