There are only 5 remaining homeowners and they presumably have all been there since the fire started, making them all adults who can appreciate the risk and make their decisions. Mr. Womer himself is 88. Sure, there’s a risk the few remaining inhabitants could be killed by poison gases or sudden sink holes, but I’m willing to bet they are all of an age where they could also pass peacefully in their sleep and no one would be surprised to hear it. I say unless they are posing a risk to others, let them stay.

Exactly! “Save me from the people who would save me from myself.”

If the Government in their infinite wisdom had spent as much money and resources on putting out the fire as they have spent on trying to forceably remove the residents, the fire would be out and the residents would still be there. Get the government out of this town. Leave the five families that want to remain alone. I for one am fiercely against “Eminate Domaine”. This smacks of another government land grab. The government cannot afford to manage the land that they currently control.

I’m curious if any carrier insures the remaining homes. Maybe a non-fire and smoke policy? ;-)

This has to be the closest thing to the “Springfield Tire Fire” (a running gag in the Simpsons) I have heard of.

This is a sad story of Nero plays as Rome burns. It will be far longer than another 50 years for this to burn itself out and, nobody cares. A shame for sure.

well, i know that the developer of the land and the mining rights will be gone unless someone get’s this fire out… how much money has been lost in not only moving folks and demolishing bldgs, but in the amount of coal that is missing from being used as a commodity… lost money to the state for any tax purposes… they should just temporarily remove folks, drop a bomb on it to quelch the fire… have the national guard out to help with any fire duties… this would definately end the quest of the neverending fire!
