It is very unfortunate that any student would choose to end their life in any fashion, but to then sue the school is just another cash grab.
(From a risk management standpoint, schools should consider constructing steps and sidewalks out of marshmallow, so no one will hurt themselves if they accidentally trip and fall)….
If the University isn’t responsible for the suicides yet, they sure will be after installing nets. If a net breaks or fails and someone dies, they might as well not even defend themselves and just pay the millions. It’s best to leave it alone or if anything, put up a sign that says, “The surgeon general warns that jumping off this bridge causes death.” Or make all students at admission time, sign a consent that they understand jumping into the gorge causes death and that if they do that, the school cannot be sued. I know it’s pretty silly, but so are the lawsuits. If anything the school and city should sue the parents for having to clean up the mess. I’m not trying to be insensitive, but if your kid or loved ones kills themselves, someone close to them wasn’t paying attention to warning signs, and more than likely that would have been a family member or close friend, not a school that is providing an education.
The first three paragraphs is talking about a kid who was last seen with a friend walking…
First question: Did he fall by accident?
Second: Did his friend not call anyone for help?(…found the body the next day)
Third: Did his friend just watch him fall or jump without trying
stop him?
Fourth: If it is an accident and there are dangers from walking by
the gorge, shouldn’t there already be warning signs to that
affect?
Fifth: Why did it take two years before the parents decided to
sue?
This article is at best confusing. It has left out too many details. And the first person it is discussing sounds like an accident, but the rest is about suicides and then some BS about the school.
I really wish that the people who write these articles would include all of the pertinent information and write in a more cohesive manner. I have read 8th grade essays that were written better.

People are out to blame everyone else for their problems instead of taking personal responsibility. There are “cash leaches” out there who look for things to sue over. I work in the hospitality industry and I’m so used to idiots that slip and fall and immediately blame the establishment instead of taking responsibility over their own clumbsiness and stupidity of not watching where they were going.
I attented the University of (wait for it) Nebraska….lots of money there with the Athletic department. On my way to class one day, I fell on some ice that was covered by snow. And then I fell again when I tried to get up. (you can laugh…I sure did). I conked my head pretty good, but it never occured to me to hold the University responsible. ESPECIALLY because there were thousands of other people walking on the same stretch of sidewalk that I was, without falling. The exceptions should never make the rule. This lawsuit is pretty pathetic. And I completely agree with Baxtor.

The parents waited two years to sue because the statute was running. Can’t help you on the others.
