GEICO Appoints AVP to Lead PIP Staff Counsel Operation in New York

March 14, 2013

GEICO, a Chevy Chase, Md.-headquartered auto insurance unit of Berkshire Hathaway, said Richard Solowan has been named assistant vice president of the GEICO companies. In his new role, Solowan will be responsible for the personal injury protection (PIP) staff counsel operation in New York.

Solowan joined GEICO in 1992 as an attorney in the company’s staff counsel department, where he defended GEICO and policyholders throughout Brooklyn, the Bronx and Manhattan. He was later named lead attorney in Westchester County, a position he held before relocating to GEICO’s office of legislative counsel in Washington, D.C. in 1999.

He was the lead legislative attorney on behalf of GEICO when the company re-entered New Jersey in 2004. Since then, Solowan has served as senior counsel for New York and New Jersey representing GEICO before the legislatures and insurance departments — most recently handling the multitude of issues that arose due to Super Storm Sandy.

GEICO (Government Employees Insurance Company) is the third-largest private passenger auto insurer in the country. It provides auto insurance coverage for 10 million policyholders and insures more than 16 million vehicles.

In addition to auto insurance, GEICO offers insurance products for motorcycles, all-terrain vehicles (ATVs), and mobile homes. Coverage for life, boats, homes and apartments is available through the GEICO insurance agency. Commercial auto insurance and personal umbrella protection are also available.
