Actor Jim Carrey’s Biz Has WC Coverage, NYS Workers’ Comp Board Says

Actor Jim Carrey was reportedly accused of failing to buy workers’ compensation insurance for his New York-based art studio business — but it appears it is just a case of a clerical error.

Hollywood news site TMZ.com reported this week that the New York State Workers’ Compensation Board fined the famed actor $72,000 for allegedly failing to buy workers’ comp insurance during 2012. The workers’ comp coverage was required for Church of FFC, an art studio that Carrey opened in 2011.

The TMZ report said the Workers’ Compensation Board has gone to court in a bid to collect the fine. The report also quotes a Carrey representative as saying that it is just “a clerical error” made by others and that it would be cleared up immediately.

The New York State Workers’ Compensation Board now backs that assertion. The Board told Insurance Journal that “Mr. Carrey has coverage” and that the carrier filed the wrong employer identification number.

His carrier filed under the wrong FEIN number, which is the employer identification number, the Board spokesperson said. “Another problem we had though was during the collections period, four of the inquiry letters were returned as undeliverable,” so the insurer must change the employer identification number and then the judgement will be lifted, the Board said.
