Consumers also have access the NMVTIS website to identify a vehicles history. All carriers, recyclers and salvage yards are required to report any vehicle with a junk or salvage title. Insurers must report a vehicle which has been totaled if it is current model year plus any of the four prior model years that the carrier has obtained possession of (including owner retained salvage)and has decided are junk or salvage automobiles, including those determined to be a total loss or face a potential fine of $1000 foe each failure to report. Reports from NMVTIS are relatively inexpensive (approx. $3-$5).
