Western N.Y. Snowstorm Cost Erie County Government $7.5M

Last month’s epic snowstorm that hit portions of western New York has cost Erie County government an estimated $7.5 million.

The Buffalo News reports the figure includes damage and expenses and is expected to go up as overtime and snow-removal costs are tallied.

Buffalo and nearby cities and towns are still adding up their cost estimates. The town of Hamburg has reported a preliminary figure of $2 million. An official in Lackawanna says that’s city’s estimate is $2.8 million.

The newspaper reports that the state, county and local governments must document a combined $27.3 million in costs to be eligible for Federal Emergency Management Agency reimbursement.

The storm dropped as much as seven feet of snow in some areas and forced officials to close a 132-mile stretch of the Thruway.
