Uber is an illegal law-breaking TAXICAB operation. It’s not (just) an app. App is an excuse that Uber uses to evade laws and regulations followed by others. What legal small business taxicabs were paying local municipalities for the right to operate, multibillion multinational Uber mega-corporation is just taking away for itself. It’s a crime. No other way to put it.

And no, Uber is not innovation, there were taxicab apps BEFORE Uber, but these followed laws which Uber is breaking daily.

Consider this – Citibank has an app. Does that mean that banking regulations no longer apply
to Citibank because it has “an app” ?? Uber is a TAXICAB operation with an app. It should (and
must) follow local TAXICAB laws and regulations. With BILLIONS in Uber’s deep pockets,
it is inexcusable to let Uber off the hook while enforcing strict laws and regulation on thousands of local taxicab businesses.

      Rob,

I think you’re looking at the situation incorrectly. Step back. Think about the future. Society will always seek whatever is cheaper and more efficient – a primary economic assumption. Uber is able to offer lower prices to consumers, flexibility to drivers (they can turn off/on the app and drive at any time), and it’s product is extremely easy (and kind of fun) to use.

The problems with Uber will be worked out. They will have stricter hiring and insurance regulations. The industry will adjust and taxi’s will become more like Uber.

Uber is innovation! Just because there were taxi cab apps before Uber, doesn’t mean it’s not innovative. The innovation comes with the UI, how well it works, how readily available an Uber driver is no matter where in the city you are.

Taxi companies’ business models will eventually become more like Uber’s; Uber will face much more competition, and the market will evolve into a more efficient machine. In the meantime, people will resist the change and fight the innovation, but efficiency and price will always prevail.
