The federal government is sending $116 million to New York City to compensate for funds spent in a program that made flooded homes habitable after Superstorm Sandy.
Sens. Charles Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand were joined by New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio on Tuesday to announce the reimbursement for the Rapid Repairs program. The money is coming from the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
The Rapid Repairs program was an effort in the aftermath of Sandy to make basic fixes in some homes for free. It enabled residents to stay put instead of moving elsewhere while larger repairs were made.
The city spent about $500 million on the program and worked on more than 20,000 houses and apartments.
